Fire checks

Managers and all ‘persons in charge’ (PICs) are asked to carry out daily fire checks of buildings, paying particular attention to ensure:

Escape routes are maintained and kept clear of obstructions and trip hazards
Fire alarm call points are unobstructed and fire action notices clearly displayed and up to date
Smoking policy strictly enforced
General attention to housekeeping, waste disposal and storage
All electrical equipment to be switched off when not in use
All fire doors are operating, closing fully into the frame, kept closed and are not wedged open
Fire exit doors unobstructed and operating correctly
External exit routes clear and free from obstructions, slip and trip hazards
All external storage kept away from the building, secure and where possible away from perimeter fencing.
Security

Security must be maintained at all times including any external storage or ancillary buildings.

Any buildings connected to the Romec alarm-receiving centre are advised to test the connection prior to 9am tomorrow.

Please ensure that duty managers’ contact telephone numbers are up to date and registered with the alarm-receiving centre.

I hardly ever see my DOM these days -always at meetings somewhere else, presumably taking about efficiencies and future job losses....

When I first joined RM 10 years ago, we had H&S come around our DO. I got the "evil eye" from management when I pointed out about fire-doors propped open with extinguishers, blocked gangways, rubbish on the floors, unsafe stairwells and floors etc. The H&S guy had a big grin on his face when I showed him and he was merrily writing all of this down. Management were not impressed as they got a bollocking, so I just told them bluntly that H&S was drummed into everyone in my previous job because of the very nature of the work we did. We used highly flammable liquids everyday, and not in small quantities either, along with heavy machinery as well as other rather large machines. Things are somewhat better now as gangways etc are kept clear and fire-doors are not propped open with extinguishers, due to the different DIM's that have passed through, each one seems to have their "own take" on H&S and what needs to be done as well.
We actually had a fire drill the other month and as we cleared the building, people thought we were on a walk-out, as they walked past on their way to work and we were outside for about fifteen minutes, and no head-count/roll call to make sure we were all there either, as some posties were still inside throwing off! That was the first one in over a year, and since I've been here that's about the fourth one if I recall, unlike my previous job we had at least one each quarter, the time and date was always different too and a fire-alarm test each month.

RM's H&S standards are laughable to say the least!

how can managers do all this when they are prepping walks, portering mail, doing ips sorting, breaking mail down, handing out van keys, handing out specials..................???????

Bloody hell what's a fire alarm. Been here 7 years, heard it once, when it was tested. Had a fire drill once, after an H & S rep came. As nobody ever signs in how could a roll call be done, which I think is a legal requirement.

A health and safety rep will raise it in his report, in the meantime you can always close it yourself

It comes down to the fact that, as the signs say:

Health And Safety Is Everyones Concern

and those on mirrors in the toilets:

You are Looking At The Person Responsible For Your Safety

You may go closing all the doors that are propped open but people will still prop them open again afterwards, along with any other things that are out of place, others will ignore it and Management need to be more proactive on H&S but they don't seem to care, nor do people who do this kind of thing. Anything to cut corners in an effort to get the job done!? Complaining about this seems to fall on deaf ears.

I'm wondering if the HSE need to be informed of how slack RM are over H&S and give them a swift kick up the arse over H&S? Or would that be "overkill"?

I must have been working for 5 years before any fire check was caried out. As in many RM buildings ,fire exits had never been tested, were blocked up etc. Then for a little while, alarms were tested then it all went to the wall. How they get away with this I do not know.
