Is there a time frame for how long you have to be away from the business to lose your seniority I guy at work left the company for 8 weeks then returned but lost his seniority another left for 10 days and returned but kept his seniority..They guy that left for 8 weeks started another job but the guy that left for 10 days did not start another job both kept their original pay numbers on returning to work..What is the take on this anyone ? thanks

Re: Seniority leaving Royal Mail then returning..
Anyone leaving RM then rejoining would lose their seniority. But under the Ways of Working section in the Way Forward Agreement 2002 previous seniority can be restored by local agreement in 'exceptional circumstances'. I will post the relevant paragraph when I can dig out my copy of the Way Forward.

This is the relevant paragraph:
Way Forward Agreement 2002
Section 6 Way of Working
Para 6.
All service within an appropriate grade whether on permanent or temporary basis will count for
seniority purposes, with the exception of any periods worked on a casual contract, or during a career
break or sabbatical. Unpaid leave will count provided there is no break in contract. Service after age
60 will continue to count. However service must be continuous for seniority purposes, with periods
prior to the break in contract (due to re-employment, for example) not generally included, unless
there are exceptional circumstances applying to particular cases that are agreed at local level.

I've read somewhere if you return within 6 months seniority is rolled over.

For a termination of an employment contract legislation dictates a maximum of 10 days from termination of one contract of employment to the start of another. Anything less will be classed as a continuation of the original contract if with the same employer. I am using the Agency workers Regulations as a source to this statement.
