myself and 9 others have been chosen at random and
have been asked to provide passport and nat/insurance card to be photo copied
for inland revenue on some right to work info,someone was asked last week and was told it was for r/mail security
has anyone else had this in thier office am a bit wary of passing this info as it sounds unusual

This happens fairly frequently. RM has to do random checks to ensure its employees are legally entitled to work here.

its not random, its the people in the office who rm have discovered they did not get the correct information on at employment stage(usually managers fault for not copying and signing and sending to hr), they are slowly working through the whole company to get all the required docs,

I was threatened with the sack in my previous job if I didn't provide my birth certificate and national insurance number. I should have let them try to sack me and took them to ACAS and done them.

You would have lost, it's a legal requirement for all companies to have the correct records so if that means asking people to provide the info again that was provided at the time they started then so be it, if you didn't provide the correct info when they required it and they gave you a reasonable time to do so they would be perfectly in the right to sack you unfortunately
