What are the conditions for a sabbatical in Royal Mail?

Good afternoon,
I have been in Royal Mail for for around 14 years (full time) and was considering taking a year sabbatical.Are there any conditions that mean that you are not allowed to take it?,like maybe going to college or just for time out?.Also is your job still open when your times up?.
If you could give me as much information as possible and what i would need to do i would be extremely grateful.

Brilliant thank you very much!.Do you have to cite your reasons for taking one?.How do they stand with regards to it being taken to do studying at college or university?.Is this permitted?.

You would have to provide some evidence of what you want it for. RM do give sabbaticals for studying full time. They do expect you to return to work at RM for at least 2 weeks in the year. I worked with people on sabbaticals for studying who would return to work during the Xmas, Easter, and summer breaks from university.
The drawback is that you might not get back to the same duty, shift or workplace at the end, you might be expected to go somewhere else on a different shift or duty, or on less hours.

I am due to start one in September, received no resistance at all from managers, although due to having had 3 managers in the last few months I have had no written confirmation. You fill in a form stating the reason for and the length of time you would like, I handed mine in at the start of May but have still not had it returned. One manager said it was fine and I could go ahead and book flights, but until I get the form returned and signed i am not going to do so....You need to give a 3 month minimum notice of your intentions for them to get a chance to recruit for your position, so get your skates on if you want to start a course in September. What course you planning to do?
