If front door is open, is leaving packets acceptable?

Do tracked items with no signature have to be handed to the person? Often people leave their front doors open visible to the street etc, can you safely leave the package? Given that technically the front door is the delivery point.

As far as I'm aware, as long as none of the mail for an address needs a signature, items can be left inside the open main front door.

If they have a porch with a letterbox on the outer wall/door and the porch door is open, you either need to post it through a letterbox on the inner door/wall (or through an open inner door), or if nothing exists you can endorse it stating there is nowhere safe to leave the mail and take it back to the depot.

If there is nothing on record back at the depot to say otherwise, you should not be placing any mail in unsecured mail boxes that do not need a key to gain access to the mail, anyone can come along and take the mail away... with your head on the chopping black.

First thing I do is try the door. If it's locked then I knock. Most people leave their doors open where I deliver, especially if they are expecting a packet.

Similarly, addresses with external wall mounted letter boxes. If the letter box has a broken slot cover, do you still post mail in the box, or through the letter box on the door? Of course, if the door has no letter box, then you don't have a choice.

Edit: if you are talking about an open porch door with a closed inner door then I'd only leave anything if I could close the door after, assuming the door has a letterbox as that's where the mail ends up anyway. Never leave anything visible from outside, certainly not in an open porch.

If it's an open door into the house itself then just sling it in!

A few of my customers have unlocked porches, so I drop packets in. None of them have asked me not to do it. If it's a glass door, I try to put them out of sight.

As for open doors, I drop packets behind the door out of sight. If a glass door, reach through doorway and drop round the corner - again out of sight.
