Times on my round
Hello chaps,
Im on a round of 696 doors. We had a revision last october, and I signed for this round which im on now. The revision was supposed to be signed off in february.
It was such a cockup, it wasnt. we are still waiting for the planners to come in and fix it.
Now, heres my situation. I am meant to leave the office between 0930 and 1000 depending on the day of the week, and be back by 3pm.
Thats 5 -5 hours and 30 mins to do the round.
Mon and tues, no problem,(unless there is a bank holiday backlog of course!!)
The rest of the week on the busy days, i can be out till 5 30pm at the latest. I have been moaned at by the supervisor, and the DOM, and have been threatened with walk testing.
I will never win the award for "Worlds fastest posty" I will admit that, but im working as fast as i can.I dont always get a proper break because im worrying about the finish times.
If they test me, isnt there a long retraining proceedure to get me up to their "standards"? I have done 9 years in the job, and have never been moaned at before.
I am fine with working to my time, but i dont want to rock the boat by making them get someone to do the cutoff bit. Im worried i will be sacked for not finishing.
Thanks for the advice in advance guys!!

Re: Times on my round
lee42 don't be worried about him testing you , just do the job by the book , start on time , take 20 mins relief before you leave the office , use trolleys etc , take your other 20 mins half way round , it is the only way to show these clowns the full p&l is a load of s**t , stick to your guns and ignore the runners and people who work for nothing.

Re: Times on my round
Unless this is a deep rural delivery then no way should it take 5hr 30mins. Something is clearly wrong. As the others have suggested I would ask for the round to be tested.

Not officially, they can be longer depending on delivery methods after a revision.

Lee, you cannot be sacked for not finishing. You are not legally obliged to work overtime. As has been said, ask your manager to come out with you and test your walk. If and I will be surprised if they can prove that you are slow, then they need to find out the reason why, and put in a training programme to support you in reaching the required standard. By the way, I haven,t a clue what or if there is a required standard for out door work. How do you assess what is a sensible speed for delivery when every postperson has a different age, gender, body frame, standard of physical fitness. Do not be afraid to stand up to these little Hitlers. Most of them haven,t got the slightest idea how long a walk should take, no idea of standards or agreements that are in place, and are just barking down orders from above to save their own necks. They cannot manage as they have not got freedom to make judgements and so they make up their days trying to make everybody else's day as Shite as theirs.

i like that post lincox. It is so true.No manager would ever take up a challenge of "show me how its done" because they have no idea how it should be done, or if they do they also know that following proper procedures they would not have a chance of completing. We had a clown who said he could do 80 calls in 10 minutes.According to that logic he could do my delivery which sometimes takes me over 5 hours in about 1 hour 20. i still chuckle at that one.

if you are going as fast as you can, then you have nothing to worry about. Challenge them to test it if they keep harassing you. make sure you get union involved if they do go down this route though.
To be honest it seems youre doing a tremendous amount of goodwill by staying out and completing every day, Id be cutting off and letting them deal with it.

Re: Times on my round
It should not even be about going as fast as you can. The job should be about delivering mail carefully in order to avoid as many mistakes as possible, being polite and aware of the residents and visitors who are in your vicinity, aware of any potential hazards, carrying out the work in the manner prescribed within the joint agreements, and at a pace that is neither slow nor at a pace that reduces your energy levels too quickly, in other words at a pace that is consistent with your normal walking pace, not some ill conceived idea that 4 miles per hour or whatever it is can be maintained throughout a 4 to 5 hour (even more in some cases) walk.Postie45 wrote:if you are going as fast as you can, then you have nothing to worry about. He also needs toilet breaks taken into account. No way should he be going 5 hours plus without a proper toilet stop. If you need a slash, cut off and walk back to the D.O. That will mean even longer out or more cut off mail.

Re: Times on my round
Like all manual tasks everything can be measured to within a reasonable level of accuracy (+/- 5% with 95% Confidence) inc outside workload. However to do so would require every walk to be walk tested by someone qualified and trained to assess work rate e.g. an Industrial or Work study Engineer. Even if a DOM or planner tests a walk at the end of the day they are not either trained or qualified to assess the speed (in BS terms) at which an individual is working. Over the course of a walk the target should be, in my opinion, 75Bs, which is a good rate of work for someone who is not working on a performance related incentive scheme. There will always be variations between the performance levels that staff are able to achieve due to fluctuations in ability and a duty structure needs to cater for this. No amount of training can make a 60 year old 20 again but I would expect the former to be able to achieve 75Bs over the duration of an attendance. Allowances also need to be made in fluctuations in traffic volume meaning that achieving an overall mean of 75Bs is unlikely to be achieved over a period of time.Lincox wrote:By the way, I haven,t a clue what or if there is a required standard for out door work. The following is taken form another post:
POSTMAN wrote:Below is an email i recieved a while back,i haven't contacted the guy back as yet, maybe it's time to...I am a retired work-study consultant and trainer, who spent a lot of time working with and training Royal Mail managers the correct implentation of expectations of workloads.
I read that Royal Mail are expecting their posties to walk at 4 m.p.h. as an average whilst working. This is the concept laid down in the B.S. concerning work-study, but this figure only relates to a male of average stature, and of European origin, walking unladen on level ground, and equates to 100 B.S. performance. These parameters do not apply to the average postie, who is certainly not unladen, nor is he/she always on level ground.Neither does the figure take into account the need for rest and relaxation and environmental allowances.
It would seem that the management of Royal Mail have abandoned all efforts to ensure a safe and acceptable workload for their staff, and have quickly forgotten the valued principles of work-study which once they embraced.

Looks like its going to happen http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 15&t=63053" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but not every duty, which couldn't be expected to happen anyway.Budfrog wrote: Like all manual tasks everything can be measured to within a reasonable level of accuracy (+/- 5% with 95% Confidence) inc outside workload. Re: Times on my round
Looks like they are only looking at indoor methods and checking associated planning values (or developing new ones) together with some frequencies (distances and fills). The timing itself is straightforward, the tasks will be broken down into elements for measurement, the rating however is where some expertise will be required. All IEs timing staff within RM must hold a valid 'Rating Card' and there should be enough studies taken to ensure that the results are statistically accurate the results should be accompanied with a flowchart which shows precisely what method was used at the time of the study.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Looks like its going to happen http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ...
