Getting HGV licence

Post by datasaint »

Do you think this is worth doing, is there likely to be the opportunity of doing odd days work driving for RM? I work near the main mail centre.

It's expensive but it would be a good way of gaining experience.

Many hgv jobs start with agency staff whilst gaining experience. Search RM sites for jobs to see how they staff the shifts, overtime etc. Good luck

Yeah Category C and Category C+E for artics. Look on job sites and most of the firms still refer to it as HGV Class 1 or 2. : )

Firstly what unit of RM are u presently working in for example if you are presently employed in the delivery section and a position is advertised in the distribution section for a professional driver and you hold the seniority to apply for this position then RM will put you through the training to drive vehicles up to 7.5 T Standard at their expense as part of their development of your skills within RM.
LGV is for vehicles from class 2 to class 1 status which is operated by the logistics division and would be subject to a transfer.
Under the present review of network and programme of works would investigate thoroughly before considering this move.

Again I repeat not in our neighbourhood 7.5T vehicles operating from MC are operated through distribution and vehicles over 7.5T are operated by logistics. So once again the regulations are not applied nationally.

Distribution is part of logistics. Except in a few very small MCs where it is managed by processing.

Once you have done Cat C, a rigid, you will then have to do your C+E which is your artic licence, this will be all the LGV categories. You can't drive on the road yet though, once you have passed the DVLA LGV tests you then have to do five modules, a module a day, on the DCPC course. The DCPC has to be renewed very five years. You will also need a digital tachometer card as we'll.
A big outlay to start with and a lot of firms won't employ you until you have had two years worth of experience, don't know how Royal Mail stands on this issue.
