If a few apply it is the DOM's decision. It is a specialist role, being the only applicant won't mean you would get the job as you may not be suitable. Can't answer the rest sorry.

I thought you had to apply on line these days if a vacancy occurs.

specialist roles are not down to the doms decision, they are given to the most senior suitable person, so if 4 or 5 apply and 2 or more pass the selection tests then it goes down to seniority to get the specialist post

In our office we were told that there has to be an interview process and as it's sort of a promotion in the sense it involves extra wages that it has to be done like any job vacancy and doing so without an interview and giving to favourites or on seniority would be illegal.

Not illegal to cover on seniority, the process how to do so is covered in the way forward agreement

You're right. The new roles are much wider in scope and apart from the test there is an interview and the post is given to the most suitable not the most senior after the interview process.

Gen up on what the role involves before applying. The new coaches won't just be teaching new recruits. You will also ensuring rm standards and wcm mantra is carried out by all involved. You will be the buffer between the line manager and front line staff so having a thick skin might be a necessary quality. Having to tell a d/o of thirty years standing that he needs coaching might be a hard pill to swallow .... Just saying.

Seniority isn't a legally recognised way of sorting things out, things like walks and stuff can be picked on seniority but this shouldn't be, if it is in your office I'd put a grievance in. If you went for a job interview and was the best man for the job but someone else got it because they'd be alive longer than you would you think that's fair? Work place coach has to be done fairly because it involves extra pay, it should be advertised on your offices board when a place is available but so many managers are allowed to get away with doing it quietly and picking their favourites.

seniority is a legally recognised way of sorting it out, it is not illegal in anyway shape or form, in fact its part of the national agreement that the cwu has negotiated with royal mail, its in black in white in the way forward

It's not illegal but it's not approved by any legal systems, they don't support it but it is allowed. Dig deeper you'll see

SELECTION BY SKILLS

15.1 All frontline jobs performed by the new multi-skilled single operational grade will have the same core capabilities. However, it is recognised that there are come jobs that require more specialised skills. An objective selection process will be introduced for these jobs.

15.2 These jobs will be filled by the most senior person who has achieved the right standard for the job during the selection process. Sick attendance and conduct record will only be taken into account where these are relevant to the work. Where training is required by the most senior suitable person, this will be given prior to appointment.

15.3 Resourcing procedures will be based on the Resourcing Area. This will in all cases be the Royal Mail administrative area (i.e. the areas managed by Area Managers, subject to review in the light of any organisational changes). Jobs filled internally will be available to employees currently working in any office within the Area concerned.

15.4 Vacancies for specialist jobs will be advertised throughout the resourcing area. Applications should be made in writing to the Resourcing Unit.

15.5 Employees who wish to be considered for specialist jobs in general should register their interest via the Resourcing Unit or include it in their own Development Plan, a copy of which will be held by the Resourcing Unit (see section 19). This information will be used for training planning. Where a vacancy arises, equal consideration will be given to individuals who have registered their interest through Development Plan or through the Resourcing Unit in writing at the time when the vacancy is advertised. The objective is to allow and maintain openness and fairness in relation to resourcing specialist posts.

15.6 The specific jobs that require specialist skills and which will be subject to selection are:

Resourcing Unit (Bookroom);
DOM Support;
Traffic Office;
Enquiry/Callers’ Office;
Major Customer Collection drivers
(to be jointly defined at National level):
Benefits Agency/Customer Mailroom;
Travelling Post Office;
Leadership roles (formerly PHG ‘A’);
Heavy Goods Vehicle Driving (HGV);
Postbus (PSV);
VCS/MAA;
IMP/MTT;
Advanced TPM;
Non-school training

Online assessment in which you must demonstrate an ability to think independently/ show a bit of initiative, then having successfully negotiated this you are then invited to interview, probably with your DOM plus another. Your answers are the graded and the most suitable candidate gets the job regardless of seniority. You must have been working in the D.O./ Mail Centre or wherever the vacancy is for at least 12 months. I`m sure someone will correct me on the timescale if I`m wrong. If you are offered the position you will attend a 3 day course prior to beginning your workplace coaching role. Day1 W.C.M. information overload. Day 2 & 3 more useful/ practical approach, given certain scenarios/ problems within your work area and asked t solve them. You`ll be exposed to a plethora of paperwork and asked to create J.E.S.(Job element sheets) whilst working in teams, all designed to gear you towards sharing your knowledge of the job with new recruits and also helping other staff members with new equipment, (pdas), or new working practises. The way the course explains how you`ll be coaching and the way you actually end up doing the role are very different. You`ll also get some extra special banter from all your mates but if that doesn`t bother you then apply and good luck.

you were the one who said it was illegal not me, whether its supported or not matters nothing, its perfectly legal to use seniority and it addmitably may not be the fairest but at least it is very very transparent
