Advice please

I have just been diagnosed with a hernia and I felt it today picking up the bike after it fell over, has anyone else suffered this and carried on working? what help did you get? thanks in anticipation

There are different types of hernia so unless anyone on here has access to your diagnosis the advice will be limited.
Your doctor should advise you and you need to ask for an ATOS referral and a properly defined list of what you can and can't do.

Take doctor advice some time it's goes dangerous. U can't carry on weight as far as I know.

Depending on ATOS's report you will prob be placed on lighter duties whilst you wait for surgery. Inform your dom asap.

Guys at my office have been through this and once through the Op have been able to return to full duties.

I take it that your GP has diagnosed the hernia which due to the nature of your work is more than likely to be an inguinal hernia and what boxes has your GP ticked on your fit note or have you been signed off work altogether. If you have been signed off work then you can expect RM to refer you to OH Assist ( formally known as ATOS ) and a rehabilitation programme set up as it will be sometime before you are given a surgery date and RM will try to provide modified duties in that time.
If you are off work and this may trigger the attendance procedure ensure that with accompaniment of a rep at this interview that you will be off again for corrective surgery to your medical condition and this to be discounted.

yes it is an inguinal hernia, are they likely to tell me to go sick which I cannot afford as I have not worked their a year yet? I'm not in any pain with it as it has only just started

Didn't realise in your first posting that you have not completed a year with RM. Realising your financial situation you have a decision to make if it is worthwhile continuing in your present duty and not informing RM of your hernia with the possibility of making the hernia worse and become strangulated leading to further complications. I am assuming that your GP has diagnosed the hernia but has not signed you of work and that you have not informed your GP the nature and lifting involved in your work.
Not knowing what type of contract you are on would RM go through the process of an OH Assist referral and the possible recommendation of a rehabilitation plan with a modified duty or take the easier option of telling you to stay off sick knowing that you will only be in receipt of standard sick pay.
Are you a member of the union and if so you need to have a chat with your rep informing him/her of your situation as they are in a better position with your input what is best for you.
