Leave Question
My wife has got to go into hospital in a couple of weeks for quite a major operation, I have 4 young children at home and I am going to need around three weeks off work to look after them while she recovers. I have mentioned this to my union rep who told me I should be paid in full for around two weeks of this as it will come under "family friendly" rules and be classed as Special leave A. My DOM says this is rubbish and I will be paid nothing as it will be Special leave C. Who is right?

Re: Leave Question
It is at your DOMs discretion.
A couple of days paid leave at best .....

Your rep is way off the mark on this one mate.
This can't even be considered as 'urgent domestic distress' as you know it's going to happen.
Even then it would only be one days pay (3 in exceptional circumstances.
You could apply for parental leave, but this is also unpaid.
Have you looked at the possibility of using some annual leave?
Sorry I couldn't give you better news.
Hope your wife recovers well.

Re: Leave Question
Thanks everyone. I did have a feeling my rep was wrong so just wanted to make sure. I do have some annual leave lying spare so I will eat into that.

Re: Leave Question
Bizarrely if you found the whole situation really stressful and felt the need to have the time off sick, you would be paid.

Re: Leave Question
that wouldve been my plan, but i would imagine that as he has already asked about time off, and is told ''no'',,,,,,,then they will put it down as ''pre-meditated'' sick leave.clashcityrocker wrote:Bizarrely if you found the whole situation really stressful and felt the need to have the time off sick, you would be paid.

Re: Leave Question
I've not heard of time off going down as 'pre-meditated' sick leave.
The Attendance Procedure says all absences will be treated as genuine. It sounds like a reasonable issue to be stressed about as your kids come first and taking unpaid leave might not be an option as you've also got to feed those kids.
I'd suggest that you consider your sick record and any implications if you do go off sick but balance that against using up leave that you may need to take later when you are past this stressful time.

Re: Leave Question
Yes - But there is no option of taking sick without pay anyway. You don't get paid for sick when you trip the requirements which is a total of 12 months sick in any 4 year period, you cannot as far as I know elect to go sick without pay.MadeinEngland wrote:Hi I am a new forum for this website,I have been work with Royal Mail for 7 years as I don't really know if that the Royal Mail Attendance Procedure do it affect if you do take the sick without pay?
You can ask for special leave without pay in some circumstances.
