Why would you want to take a van home and leave yourself open for any blame if anything happened to the van? If it gets broken into you are sure to be suspended.

Wrong - Royal Mail do not allow personal use
9. Permission is granted solely in connection with activities carried out on behalf of Royal Mail. No personal or private use of official vehicles or powered equipment is permitted under any circumstances
so there are no Tax issues

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Company cars
There is a tax charge where, because of their employment, a car is made available to and is available for private use by a director or an employee earning £8,500 a year or more, or to a member of their family or household (a ‘company car’).

There is a further tax charge if free or subsidised fuel is provided for private use in a company car.

no. we,ve been taking vans home for nearly 4 yrs now, since park and loop came in. a couple have been broken into, but theres no blameworthyness. one was severely damaged in the floods last year. besides, theres nothing in them to pinch. my mate saves a fortune on petrol as he does not use his car to get to and from work. he picks me up in the mornings, and drops me off at home when we are finished, so I save busfare money as well. one lad takes the van home to ashington from our office which is a 30 mile round trip. why would you NOT want take advantage of this little perk?

If you own a drive / garage and do not have a extra space you will be expected to place your own car on the road. A good reason not to bother :hmmmm

Which is all well and good till they do an inspection or the van gets knocked or broken into and your mate get suspended. :neutral:

Won't you have to do the daily and weekly van check before you set off each day in your own time?

We have a manager who uses a van (a hire van usually) to get to and from work each day and that's about a 36 mile round trip each time. he never fills in the log book and he is the fleet manager, so there's no record of what he's doing. The fact that we have one vehicle doing 5 times more mileage and obviously using more fuel than any other vehicle is never picked up.

Even people that do a daily HCT delivery get back to the office and take a van home, or wait for one to come back and then go home.

How does it work when people have a rest day and they usually take the van home? I ask as this has been muted at our SPDO, 2 vans for 4 people. None of us live in the village where we work. I can't see any other way than collecting daily the vans from the main DO. The SPDO does not have adequate parking to accomodate any vehicles. Bit of a poser for the powers that be......
