LEAVE TO ATTEND FUNERALS

Been told today that I can't have any time off to attend my uncles funeral as he is not an immediate relative.Asked to book a days leave but wS told nobody can book any time off as there is a shortage of staff.So my father who is 94 years of age cannot attend his own brothers funeral as he has nobody to take him.Ive done thirty years and find this utterly deplorable.

Nothing surprises me about how low this company has got now,some aspects are still good,but wherever delivery managers are involved it all goes to ratsh1t,what happens when you cut off?,in our office they bring people in from nearby offices to cover it.What would be wrong in this case if they were to do the same thing? to cover this person's day off for the funeral.To be honest the way things are at our place and knowing that unless you are one of the gaffers club it is nigh on impossible to get a day off I would just not tell anybody and phone in sick for the day because you have to look after your elderly father.

you are entitled to one days special leave A (paid) for an uncle's funeral

Ask him to check the special leave guidelines

Unfortunately Uncle/Auntie bereavement seems to have been removed from the paid special leave guidelines.
However your DIM can't stop you going.
Annual leave, swap your day off or unpaid leave are all options.
Talk to your rep so he can help 'persuade' the 'manager'
Whatever you choose your father comes before RM.

Royal Mail is always like that whenever reasons you need a day off :( What time the funeral ? Try to swap day off with a friend if possible.

Unfortunately Uncle/Auntie bereavement seems to have been removed from the paid special leave guidelines.

When was it removed? It was always tucked away near the bottom

AFAIK any direct blood relative one step removed as it were (i.e grandparent, auntie, uncle) is 1 day spl A

I would ask to see the special leave guidelines again and check for yourself

I will ask tomorrow for the latest version and report back as I know someone in my office had a day for an uncle's funeral last week

It did used to be there (after grandparent) but I believe it has now been removed

Guidance notes for arranging special leave:
BEREAVEMENT : FOR A MORE DISTANT RELATIVE EG. PARENT IN LAW, GRANDPARENT, AUNT, UNCLE - ONE DAY WITH PAY.
Still appears on the special leave list and taken from the CWU site. Unfortunately unable to copy and paste.
Get your union rep to contact HQ to have this confirmed.
