UKIP door to doors

Post by castra »

I don't wish to get into a political debate with anyone and this isn't what this posting is about. Late last week, boxloads of UKIP's paranoid propaganda leaflets turned up at our office for distribution this coming week. Am I the only one who feels uncomfortable about being required to deliver leaflets for this party who's views and opinions many find offensive?

What could be the consequences should I request not to deliver this 'stuff' on the grounds of 'conscience'?

Anybody of high ranking in the CWU have a take on this matter and wish to comment? Given our unions affiliation with the Labour Party, I would like to think they would have been against members delivering material for a political party that are barely concealed racist and have policies that would be disastrous for many postal workers.

The ideal solution of course, is for RM to not deliver political material of any kind for any party. However, as we all know in the modern day, money is everything - No matter how dubious its source.

Whether we like it or not UKIP are a legitimate political party so you would do well to argue your case for not delivering them... ultimately someone will do them and they will be earning the cash out of it...

Conscience Clause Regarding Election Material.

6) Special Circumstances
It is jointly recognised that Royal Mail has a legal obligation to secure the delivery of election material for all nominated candidates and parties.

Whilst it is expected that delivery will be made by the individual due to undertake the particular delivery, local management will deal sensitively and sympathetically with genuine requests to deviate from this arrangement.

Such cases may arise as a result of personal circumstances or beliefs or where an individual believes that delivery of a particular item may incur personal risk.

If such instances arise alternative measures will be used to secure delivery. These may include the use of volunteers from within the office or neighbouring offices to cover more than one delivery or, as a last resort, the use of supplementary resource.

Both parties undertake to co-operate fully in the application of these principles and in resolving any difficulties that may arise surrounding the delivery of election material.

The above agreement is not for a specific party and as long as the guidelines are followed and you advise your manager of the reasons why you feel you can't deliver them then anyone can use the agreement.

As an aside I know of 1 postie that is only delivering 1 election leaflet because he is a candidate for that party and it would be a conflict of interests if he delivered any other.

Absolutely. We are supposed (RM) to be apolitical. The OP is being anti-democratic by denying householders the right to view election material from a valid political party. This is GB, not Mugabe's Zimbabwe. Me and my partner took out the whole 1,100 for our two rounds Friday, earning a nice £21 each in the process from Mr. Farage. I will just as happily deliver LieBores, Scamerons, Griffin's or Cleggar-the-Beggar's in the same fashion. It's up to the voters, not us as postmen, to influence the results of any election.

There are some poorly informed people on here, or perhaps they don't understand a fairly simple process, and are muddying the water through ignorance or spite.

1. Royal Mail has to get all the leaflets delivered for all recognised parties and candidates standing in an election. Ergo no postie has any influence on the outcome of the election just by exercising their agreed right to refuse to deliver based on moral or safety grounds.

2. Any postie can refuse to deliver any parties/candidates leaflet as long as they have a moral objection or a safety concern. If you support the BNP and you can come up with a cognisant argument not to deliver a SWP one, then you are merely exercising your rights within a democratic country, and I would support you in your endeavours, if not your political choice.

Can we claim to be a democratic country if we refuse to allow people a personal conscience whether you agree with it or not, can people really claim Freedom of Speech as a right, then decry people who exercise a right under that freedom, just because its their party that the postie has an objection to.

If you agree that any far right or far left party should have freedom to express their opinions when and where they can, why are you against individuals expressing an opinion based on their own morals. Party rights outweighing individual rights - quite a totalitarian standpoint.

re totallitarian attitudes

as an aside
are the majority of us being conditioned into this way of thinking due to unacheivable workloads and constant derision by management?

back to the point though

if you disagree with the politics=tough breasticles

if you think youll get cracked upside the head while on delivery due to the material fair play-
same goes if your genuinely upset by the material

to be honest though ill deliver owt for cash :)

wonder why my lino calls me a mercenary

Well in that case can I refuse to deliver all the scamming junk that half the pensioners on my delivery get? All these religious ministries, clairvoyants, lotteries, letters saying 'you have definitely won one of these prizes Mrs xxxx' - every last one of them trying to fleece people out of their money.

Yes, and as I have a moral objection to delivering access/last-mile mail cherry-picked by my employer's competitors which will ultimately put us out of a job if unchecked, I think tomorrow I'll not deliver TNT/UK Mail/UK Post envelopes..... :wave

I don't want to deliver them because I'm too lazy. The payment of 3.3p per item isn't worth it.
