Can anyone tell me how this "concept" is calculated ??? Would love to know - for various reasons ...

The model week is based on the lightest week of the years workload divided by the amount scored on the canteen dartboard with one dart.

If the mail levels in your DO is higher than this figure, you lapse

OK .. so what defines "mail levels" ... is it how many you can stack on top of each other until the pile falls over - or is there a more empirical mathematical calculation used by people called "planners" (I use this phrase pejoratively of course

It seems everyone is on the ale teatime today...

Here's a rough interpretation...

All mail volumes are listed from lightest (week 1) to heaviest not including xmas pressure I believe and are based on last years' figures... your model week sits somewhere between week 11 and week 18 (not 100% sure on exact weeks used)... where it sits exactly should of been voted on as part of the revision process... for example, if you set your model week at week 11 you would have to flex-up (more OT) for weeks 12 and upwards... weeks 1 -10 are then used for opportunities for lapsing which the IWT should identify... these being the summer weeks most likely...

Of course this is all well and good if volumes stay the same... apparently mail volumes are up from this time last year...

It's the second one. I think it's supposed to be based on the average week so if the mail volumes are below that they consider there is time to lapse. So basically it's calculated over a few weeks mail scattered across the year, an average is found and that's the figure.

Also don't forget that large quantities of Argle Bargle, preferably with a large side order of waffle burger with a pile of pony ladled on top, must be added to any calculations made or the "model week" will fail every time.

Of course they are.
The model week takes into account all streams of mail - letters, flats and packets.
An office with a lot of packets would be foolish to pick a model week with a low number of packets.
You don't make it up - you look at the traffic for your office.

Given that the choice of a model week is one of the basics of your revision, that it determines your staffing, p/t contracts, lapsing opportunities, overtime (flexing up) opportunities and is a major factor in your daily working life, the responses on here are astonishing.
I wonder how many could actually post what their model week is - ?
Or is it just easier to say it's all bollocks without making the effort to understand any of it?

I think the inclination is, perhaps, and I might be going out on a limb here, that Royal Mail figures are not trusted.
