holiday entitlement for reduced hours/days

Grateful for advice on annual leave entitlement. I started in July 2012 on a 30 hour contract, working 5 days a week. My annual leave entitlement has been 22.5 days per year. Earlier this year I asked to drop down to 3 days per week, which was granted from the beginning of April. I have yet to receive the new contract but have been told that it will be for 24 hours per week. So, instead of working a 6 hour day I am now working an 8 hour day.

My hours have reduced by 20% but my days have reduced by 40%. I have been told my leave entitlement will now be 13.5 days per year, ie a 40% reduction. I thought it might have been based on hours so would have received 18 days leave ie a 20% reduction. Is the 13.5 days entitlement correct?

If you now work 3 days out of 5 then your leave entitlement is now 3/5 of what it was (based on days only) so 22.5/5 then multiply by 3 = 13.5 days

On the hours you will now be paid 8 hours for each day of your holiday instead of 6. So under the hours system you had 135 hours holiday a year and the new 13.5 days 108 hours which is a 20% reduction on your annual leave.

So yes it sounds about right.

Part-time workers are also entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks of paid holiday each year, although this may amount to fewer actual days of paid holiday than a full-time worker would get.



Example

A worker works 3 days a week. Their leave is calculated by multiplying 3 by 5.6, which comes to 16.8 days of annual paid leave.

when you add in the bank holidays then the op will be getting over the 5.6 weeks equivalent, so unfortunately tbts figure is correct

what would happen if you were scheduled to work three days a week say tue wed thu therefore never being scheduled to work on a bank holiday except christmas ?

Apologies should read August bank holiday but calculation remains the same 16.8 days basic holiday entitlement. Thanks for pointing out the error.

Everything is pro-rata - the paid weeks you get off are exactly the same. Counting days/bank hols confuses the issue. This is Moyal Mail's new ethos.
Get as many as possible on low-hours PT contracts like 24 per week. This means they only have to pay you 24 hrs. for holiday pay and their 5% contribution to your pension is based on 24 hours too, so Moyal Mail saves a fortune. Then of course you end up averaging 30 or more hours a week over the year, so have been Moyally ripped-off.

This part timers leave entitlement is 13.5 days plus bank holidays, not 16.8 days

in fact a 3 day week member of staff is entitled to 18.5 days off per year including bank holidays but excluding any extra holidays due to length of service

1 day worked per week - Annual entitlement 6 Days including bank holidays but excluding any extra holidays due to length of service
2 day worked per week - Annual entitlement 12 Days including bank holidays but excluding any extra holidays due to length of service
3 day worked per week - Annual entitlement 18.5 Days including bank holidays but excluding any extra holidays due to length of service
4 day worked per week - Annual entitlement 26 Days including bank holidays but excluding any extra holidays due to length of service
