Deliveries done in workers own cars..?

Is this a legit practice?

I've been encouraged several times to use my own vehicle to deliver a full round of mail..and this isn't just to transport mail to drop boxes but to actually complete an entire round straight from the boot of my car! ..and this isn't just a one off case, i've seen many many other workers regularly doing the same thing.

Is this legal?

Am i covered insurance-wise (my Manager insists that i am...hmmmm:/)?

Isn't this also a huge security risk on the part of Royal Mail allowing such practices to take place with the General Publics mail?

...Just another day working for a very suspect company i suppose.

Unless you have business insurance on your own car insurance you are not covered and if you have an accident or get stopped by the police you are in deep trouble

Also my insurance is nearly 280 pounds cheaper without using it for work. Just to let you know another option to think about. As we don't use our cars for work anymore since we start doing van sharing.

easy answer,you simply don't do it! let them provide you with the equipment to do the job.the couriers always on about extra vans etc not that we have seen them,its laughable,tell maya,it simply shouldn't be happening,using your car starting early,cutting corners,etc and so it goes on,unbeievable.

The difference is before the revision it is allowed and you are insured by royal mail, after the revision it is banned and you are not insured

Being slightly sarcastic here, but you must be paying thousands for your car insurance, because the only type of insurance that would have covered you for carrying mail is courier insurance which is very expensive, personal business insurance does not cover you for carrying any mail, it only covers you for moving between work sites and as soon as you put goods ie mail in vehicle it becomes commercial travelling and thus not covered by your insurance and you are breaking the law

Xz Royal Mail have never covered you for business insurance. They will or have provided a bond but only where someone has business insurance cover on their vehicle.

My quote for renewal is 575 pounds and went to different company and no business insurance and using it for work which made it drop to 290 pounds. Just to let you know.

Further to the topic:

Is it OK to transport delivery bags in private cars to first port of call: such as taking 2 bags to get to the bicycle store house and then onward delivery on the bike?

The rest of the bags will be dropped of by the partner... Yes, we have had a Revision but some walks have special dispensation to use bikes. One walk especially is encouraged to use a bike to free up a Van when there is a shortage.

Also, will it be OK to do 'Lapse' with a private car?

Its not clear cut because of the changeover to P&L, some offices haven't gone over yet so they are covered by the bond, others have so they are not.

The Bond is Royal mails insurance which only covers the 3rd Party not the posties vehicle. The bond itself is a sum of money put aside for insurance claims rather than the business having to pay insurance companies.
