Biggest competitor?

With DPD recently giving out great pay increases and investing highly into new depots, have Royal Mail just got too much catching up to do? How long will it take for us to have a great parcel delivering model and at what cost?

I'm worried about this strategy to focus on parcels.

We have a delivery model that is not right for today's market. If you were starting a parcel delivery company afresh, would you
1. deliver at a time of day when the recipient is likely to be out at work
2. offer collection at a Post Office whose opening hours are such that they are already closed when the recipient has finished work
3. offer collection at a DO and require the recipient to queue with all the other people whose parcels ... (see 1 above)

Plus we got stricter rules and doesn't start delivery until 10am give 30 minutes either way.

If I were Royal Mail I would change this

1. Move start time to 6am.
2. Make everyone do the parcels sorting and bagging up.
3. Leave for delivery at 7am
4. Finished delivery for 11.30pm
5. Return to delivery office and take 30 minutes break
6. Sort Mail for next day and throw them out until 2pm
7. Go home.

Mail centre need to deliver the mail before 10:30am - cutting cost on 2 or 3 runs to delivery office.

Hands tied by legislation, unlike our competitors.

Short answer is:
No, it won't happen.

Long answer:
As universal service provider, Royal Mail are obliged to deliver to urban and rural areas, six days a week, at the same affordable prices. Any changes that are made to the service would require new primary legislation.
The Government has said that they are not going to make any such changes to this, also changes to the universal service’s minimum requirements, which include free services for the blind and services to both urban and rural areas alike, can be only be made by resolutions in Parliament and this means in both Houses. The Government have said there are no plans for such changes.

So that would surely mean that any suggestion that the privatisation of Royal Mail will lead to even more changes in the universal service obligation would therefore not happen, as without another Act Of Parliament, or any amendments, to the current Act you cannot do this.

End result:
We're still not on a level playing field with competitors, on both fronts, letters and parcels, as we've got an Act Of Parliament that sets out what we are legally obliged to do, unlike our competitors who in comparison to us have virtual Carte Blanche to do as they will. I'm not saying that start times are directly governed by legislation, but the basic way the job works is though, as start/finish times would surely need to be addressed by your "new working hours" to take into account your new delivery schedule for mail to each office.

One other thing..
A thirty minute break.. what happened to the other ten minutes? Or did you "as Royal Mail" decide to take that from us in exchange for "a new agreement as part of your new work practice"?

RM simply has to separate the parcels business from the letters in order to compete... when everyone is saying how wonderful and efficient these competitors are they seem to be forgetting they don't have to deliver half a tonne of junk mail and D2D's along with their parcels every day!

Royal Mail's competitive edge (if it has one) is that it delivers parcels and letters together through a single network. The changes introduced through delivery methods were intended to embed this approach.

It is unlikely that they will decide to reverse this and even more unlikely that it would be competitive to introduce separate parcels and letters networks. This is the reason why it is felt that Sunday delivery is not viable.
