My 6 month contract ended up just being a 6 week contract. I'm gutted and not relishing the idea of going back to the Fucktard agency. No guaranteed hours, phone calls to come in at the last minute, not able to sign on if there's no work, so debts build up. The office is ridiculously understaffed, but 20+ of us are being laid off. Is this happening anywhere else? Is this just a sign of things to come?

Firstly what was the expressed term ( written) in your contract of employment. Was it a fixed term contract or a temporary contract. If RM has not honoured your contract terms then they are in breach of contract under the implied term of " mutual trust and confidence". Don't know by your posting if you are a union member probably not by the length of service but you need to bring the matter to your union rep. If he states that he/she cannot be involved as you are not a member then your answer is you were not given enough time to join. Are RM going to pay u up to the life of your contract terms? You need to have this confirmed.

I am kinda surprised that you actually managed to get a short-term contract working in a Mail Centre. They might be unstaffed but with many doing OT and scheduled attendance - and resourcing to workload; most MC will probably prefer to go the Agency route... I think!

No, it was nothing to do with that. I'm wondering what they're doing with the full-timers contracts though. Put everyone on zero-hour contracts? They want to copy Amazon, TNT etc. so it seems like the next logical step.
