Police asking where such and such live....

this has happened twice to me this week where Police have asked me where such and such lives and have you heard of anyone called?? .......one had the cheek yesterday to ask me to go through my letters/mail and look for such and such's surname.....now this street is in a bit of a crime spot, but can you imagine If I had said such and such lives at 13 a....and this chap caught wind of it....I would get lynched.
Where do we stand where Police are concerned?
Should they asking me in the first place as this poses a threat to my safety if I disclose where such and such lives!
I nearly told one of them to f off today as in the back of his Police car he had a scruffy looking chav who was helping them to try find where such and such lives...!!!

If they ask again just tell them that it isn't appropriate to ask for information due to your personal safety and if they don't get the message make a complaint about the officers concerned. I think if they want that sort of information they have to go through the correct channels

As far as you are concerned you are forbidden to provide anybody with customer information.

You tell them, I'm sorry officer I am not allowed to provide the information you have requested.

I was expressly told at my induction that information like that is subject to the DPA and it would be a disciplinary offence to give customer details out. Maybe a debt-collector offers you a bribe to locate a debtor, or as in this case a PC asks you. The Police cannot force you to go through mail, technically they'd need a warrant to do this. The PC overstepped his authority.

When you join RM you have to sign the official secrets act, or at least you used to have to, this prevents you from giving out info willy nilly to all and sundrie, this now comes under the data protection act, the police , or debt collectors or indeed anybody else should NOT be asking for this kind of info, let them go thru the correct channels
