The cards we use are P739 with a heading "Something for you. The postie only initials it with their duty number. Forging a signature is fraud, not something anyone should do. There was an article in the Royal Mail employees magazine "The Courier" which if I remembered correctly stated that an item can still be delivered if a P739 card had been delivered under certain conditions.
I do not have the knowledge to give an answer on "is it a sackable offence" but forging a signature is not an acceptable practice for any reason.

Context would help. Are you a neighbour, colleague or the resident, all will have a different impact.

But yes it is certainly a possibility, more especially if they "Forged" a signature, that's fraud and even in the best cases leaves them open to a claim of theft directly against them.

Signing for a customer is a definite no no, and could mean dismissal as well, but probably less likely than the forgery scenario.

My partner regularly does this for someone who gets armfuls of packets on a part of the round I deliver. The customer got pissy when I said I wouldn't be doing the same. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

It is standard practice for a 'Sorry We Missed You' (p739) card to be initialled/signed in the correct place by the postman/woman. It has also recently become standard practice for items to be delivered to a neighbour, if the recipient is not available to accept delivery. The only exception to this would be if the recipient has previously indicated that they require undeliverable items to be either left in an agreed 'safe place', or to be returned to the delivery office.

As long as it has been clearly stated that the item has been left with a neighbour (and the p739 card clearly states the address to which the item has been delivered), correct procedure has been followed. Therefore no disciplinary action would be appropriate.
