Saturday rotation
In our office we currently work a 1 in 5 Saturday off rotation, the dom , with local cwu backing, has just asked to revert to 1 in 6, with the carrot that we can finish 30 mins earlier on a Saturday ( 30 mins to be made up during the week) I thought that the agreement was to try and give us more Saturdays off, not less!

Re: Saturday rotation
That's the smallest carrot they will ever wave,, 30 minutes early finish on a Saturday, that you have to make up in the week,, how generous of them

Re: Saturday rotation
I'd ask dom for 1 in 4 Saturdays as in the agreement and the early finish Saturday. How do they plan on getting you out earlier on the Saturday to enable you to finish earlier. It's all based on mail arrival times.

Re: Saturday rotation
theres 52 Saturdays in a year, taking into account a minimum of 4 complete weeks holiday a year leaves 48 Saturdays,
on a 1 in 5 that means you get 9 Saturdays off in a year
on a 1 in 6 that means you get 8 Saturdays off in a year
so 1 less Saturday for a 30 minutes earlier finish on Saturday every week, its not actually that bad a deal as long as you are getting the 30 mins every week, i would maybe try and push to get an hour earlier finish then it definitely would be worth it

Re: Saturday rotation
Hold on they're not being given 30 minutes per week, they have stated that they have to make that time up!zx135 wrote:theres 52 Saturdays in a year, taking into account a minimum of 4 complete weeks holiday a year leaves 48 Saturdays,

Also using your above number of weeks off:
(48 weeks - 9 off) x 8 hours = 312 hours
(48 weeks - 8 off) x 7.5 hours = 300 hours
As you can see the difference per year would be 12 hours.
To give that 12 hours back over your 48 weeks would actually only cost you 15 minutes per week.
(12 x 60) minutes / 48 weeks = 15 minutes per week

err i never said they wouldnt need to make it up, if you read i actually said an earlier finish of 30 minutes each saturday, also you calculation really means nothing as they are still working exactly the same number of hours
I would gladly work more time during the week to get it taken off a saturday every week, and if an enabler of that was 1 extra saturday working per year then thats a reasonable deal

Re: Saturday rotation
I made no mention of you saying anything with regards not needing to make the time up. You said it was a good deal, the deal mentioned would only have been a good one had they not been asked to make the time up!zx135 wrote:err i never said they wouldnt need to make it up, if you read i actually said an earlier finish of 30 minutes each saturday, also you calculation really means nothing as they are still working exactly the same number of hours

With different shift patterns, duty spans, contracted hours and persons working in pairs, (many together on different days of the week), the only way a Royal Mail Manager could track who was making up time during the week and who was finishing earlier on a Saturday would be to divide the difference in hours per year between the weeks worked.
Based on the above, (I've shown the maths), if they're asked to make up more than 15 minutes per week, then it's a bad deal because they would be working time for free!

Re: Saturday rotation
Your maths are completely wrong as it doesn't matter whether on a 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 or 1 in 4 they still work the same number of hours over the year, there is no time gained or lostHimaggen wrote:I made no mention of you saying anything with regards not needing to make the time up. Re: Saturday rotation
@zx135, why on earth do you insist on continually making pointless arguments. NOBODY IS HAVING A GO AT YOU!
You made a point stating that something was a good deal, it patently wasn't, because as you have admitted, they will be working the same hours! They will have a slightly shorter Saturday, but will have to work more of them and have to manage the 30 minutes 'made up' time on an ad-hoc basis probably to suit the Managers resourcing.
You made a suggestion to improve the deal as did I, your idea was to attempt to double the Saturday time off, whilst mine was to half the time made up in return.
My maths were quite correct, what wasn't correct was what they were based on, but give the sums to a Manager complete with calculator and my idea would at least have a chance of winning him over.

Re: Saturday rotation
Just to keep you up to date , we just had a WTL session with the dom who said the office had voted 4 to 1 in favour of returning to 1 Sat off in 6 !!! We keep the same finish times as before except for the half hour on Saturday and will now have 3 different start times, the earliest being 6am on Sat , 6 55 on a Tues and 6 15 the rest of the week. He is also offering up to 15 VR,s as opposed to EVR,s and possible buy down,s

What is a Saturday off?bringon4dayweeks wrote:stick in a greviance as its discriminationclaude wrote:We don't have Saturdays off in our office, I once asked and was blinded by crap as to the reasons why. And that was from our rep!!!
Our office has fixed days off ; as a fecking Local Agreement.
Funnily enough mine is a Tuesday ( is that because I have the temerity to cut off?)
When is a National Agreement worth anything? And why are Local Agreements allowed to screw workers ( because it suits the Senior staff that can select duties that have a Saturday off)
The whole thing beggars belief
