Re: world class mail
When a couple of them were here last week in our office they spent most of their time bringing D2D round to the frames!
When I asked one of them about when are we expected to put them together he said they were looking into it! Just another vast waste of time & money from RM- who don't live in the real world!

It's the sort of thing you use to do in primary school , where teacher ask you to do a project on a subject . Must have lots of graphs and coloured felt tip drawings and designs and things. Same thing except for grown ups and all gets binned at the end of term.

They'd rather waste money on this crock of shite instead of recruiting much needed full time staff.

Re: world class mail
No idea what its about or what its supposed to achieve. I noticed our dom has put up a few charts and graphs which I've never had time or inclination to look at properly. Maybe thats some of it. Whatever it is it doesn't stop us being short staffed and regularly failing rounds.
What have I done to deserve this?

Re: world class mail
well we see nobody,a dom who turns up at 6 then goes to his other office.the recent courier was full of it,i guess its the flagship of this company that they want people to see,far removed from day to day stuff at the sharp end,and I bet theres some jobsworths all trying to justify what they do,with there conference calls etc, meantime in real sharp end world, white hire vans gradually taking over our yard, and doms barking on about safety etc, just a paper trail,as my last dog bite was investigated,a year and a bit later,???? they must have been busy with a latest project.

It's not actually. WCM is a term for Process Improvement.deltaforce wrote:It's the sort of thing you use to do in primary school , where teacher ask you to do a project on a subject . PI actually works well in certain palces.
Whether it works well in RM ; in this working enviroment is another question.
aand of course we know the answer

Re: world class mail
We have had two WCM reps in our office for a few months now. One picked up on an old accident , drew some childish pictures to illustrate it, put them on the wall and made the place look like a primary school. The other has had several attempts at getting the overheads corrected and they are still not right. He has spent the rest of his time prepping duties and taking out mail which has not been delivered because of staff shortages.

All the initiatives that have come our way have hampered the the daily task in general and overloaded everyone with an excess of red tape and paperwork. You can't see the walls due to posters and who has ever got time to look at them anyway.

Apparently it's adapted from 'World class manufacturing''. In a factory environment I can see why it would work as everything is repetitive and rigid ways of working can be adhered to.hampshireman wrote:It's not actually. Try and translate that to a workplace where everything changes from day to day and it just isn't going to work.

Try and translate that to a workplace where everything changes from day to day and it just isn't going to work.
The workplace per se does not change every day - the work is repetitive - volumes yes but not processes
What WCM process steps are trying to do is delayer the defective elements of a process to minimise error, improve yield and standardise the workplace.
i.e - mail comes in - mail goes out.
What WCM should do is:
Rolled Throughput Yield is calculated by multiplying the yields of each process step. Calculations can become increasingly complicated as more parallel processes are introduced. It is first necessary to calculate the yield of each process step. We can estimate the yield of a process step by dividing units produced by the number of units accepted for that step. Suppose a process step produced 10 units and only 8 were good units. The yield of that step would be 8/10 or 0.80.
RTY Example:
RTY = Yield of Process step 1 * Yield of Process step 2 * ... * Yield of Process N
Suppose a process had 3 steps. Step 1 produced 10 units and 2 were defective, the yield of step 1 would be 8/10 or 0.80, Step 2 had a yield of 0.9 and step 3 had yield of 100%. The Rolled Throughput Yield for this entire process would be:
RTY = 0.80 * 0.90 * 1.0 = 0.7278900016
RTY = 72%
The probability of this 3 step process producing a defect free product is 72%
Rolled Throughput Yield Loss (RTYL) is the inverse of RTY, RTYL = 1 - RTY
Total number of audited samples are divided by total sample size. This gives the First Pass Accuracy. When it is divided by total yield it gives the Rolled Throughput Yield. RTY means rolled throughput yielding
What WCM does is not this. The need is further to analyse the daily business more effectively and efficiently before putting into place 'must do' commands - In other words, start listening to the most effective people you have i.e the workers
Which is why as a trained, Six Sigma Green Belt, Lean Management & Hoshin trained Business planner/analyst I refuse to assist. For many years my favorite method has been Hoshin Kanri for any policy deployment.
"Each person is the expert in his or her own job, and Japanese TQC [Total Quality Control] is designed to use the collective thinking power of all employees to make their organization the best in its field." This is the fundamental principle of hoshin kanri. In Professor Ishikawa's words in his book What Is Total Quality Control?: "Top managers and middle managers must be bold enough to delegate as much authority as possible. That is the way to establish respect for humanity as your management philosophy. It is a management system in which all employees participate, from the top down and from the bottom up, and humanity is fully respected."
The discipline of hoshin kanri is intended to help an organization:
. Focus on a shared goal.
. Communicate that goal to all leaders.
. Involve all leaders in planning to achieve the goal.
. Hold participants accountable for achieving their part of the plan.
It assumes daily controls and performance measures are in place: "With hoshin kanri... the daily crush of events and quarterly bottom-line pressures do not take precedence over strategic plans; rather, these short-term activities are determined and managed by the plans themselves."
Hoshin planning systematizes strategic planning. To be truly effective, it must also be cross-functional, promoting cooperation along the value stream, within and between business functions.
Hoshin planning is a seven-step process, in which you perform the following management tasks:
1. Identify the key business issues facing the organization.
2. Establish measurable business objectives that address these issues.
3. Define the overall vision and goals.
4. Develop supporting strategies for pursuing the goals. In the Lean organization, this strategy includes the use of Lean methods and techniques.
5. Determine the tactics and objectives that facilitate each strategy.
6. Implement performance measures for every business process.
7. Measure business fundamentals.
The hoshin process employs a standardized set of reports, known as tables, in the review process. These reports are used by managers and work teams to assess performance. Each table includes:
. A header, showing the author and scope of the plan
. The situation, to give meaning to the planned items
. The objective (what is to be achieved)
. Milestones that will show when the objective is achieved
. Strategies for how the objectives are achieved
. Measures to check that the strategies are being achieved
Hoshin tables types:
Hoshin review table: During reviews, plans are presented in the form of standardized hoshin review tables, each of which shows a single objective and its supporting strategies.
Strategy implementation table: Implementation plans are used to identify the tactics or action plans needed to accomplish each strategy.
Business fundamentals table (BFT): Business fundamentals, or the basic elements that define the success of a key business process, are monitored through its corresponding metrics. Examples of business fundamentals are safety, people, quality, responsiveness, or cost.
Annual planning table (APT): Record the organization’s objectives and strategies in the annual planning table. The APT is then passed down to the next organizational structure.
The implementation plan usually requires coordination both within and between departments and process owners. Implementation plans are not just the responsibility of an individual completing the lowest-level annual plan. Each level in the organization carries detailed responsibilities to ensure support for and successful completion of the organization’s plans.
P. s if anyone has made it this far and anyone from RM reading this - Yes I will assist. My consultancy rate is £350+v.a.t per day. - Thank you.

You forgot two more basic rules to apply, namely-
1) SI=SO, and there's plenty of that going on.
2) Any scheme, theme, process or procedure which uses Japanese words over English is at best psycho-babble, and at worst pure BS.
No load of old bollix like WCM is going to be effective anyway if lip-service-only managers can't get the basics right with disaffected and cynical employees, and it doesn't take a fifteenth dan kirin-trained green belt with double oak leaves and bar professor of cliches and shiny suits to see that...

I asked a WCM analyst employee about the 'need' to use the Japanese words over a correct English terminology and was told "that's how RM have told us they want to do it" - That one simple reply flys in the face of what it is all about. - It's not about being 'told' - it's about working together for a common practice. - Oh that and all the spelling mistakes on the multitude of different styled mish mash graphs and hand written overlapping thru-put diagrams that had been placed on the wall...
Until they do this right, it will certainly just cause more disaffected and cynical employees
