Booking a day off

I want to book a Saturday off in July and was wondering if anyone on here has much trouble doing this.I have plenty of holidays left and don,t want to swap with anyone or come in on my rotational week off,but our office is permanently understaffed and trying to book a day off is like asking for a bite of the managers doughnut.What is the actual procedure to ensure I get this day off ?.I feel it would be easier to do a sickie but why should it be like this.

Same in our office, woefully understaffed, lapsing everyday, i have a weeks leave for this year from April and can't get any leave available till after Christmas....wtf, don't agree with it but the only option is to do a sickie

If you are asking for a day off in 4 months time I would be find it ridiculous if you were denied it. Speak to your rep or area rep.

There is no correct procedure to ENSURE that you get the day off. To apply for ad-hoc days off requires 14 days notice in writing and dependant on occupational needs. As ad-hoc days are under the control of your line manager and not the duty room and as you have mentioned that your unit is under staffed then you will find it extremely difficult if you do not wish to do a swap. I would expect if you notify them now for time off in July your answer will be that you are far to early and apply nearer the time when resourcing levels are monitored. Therefore you are in a no win situation other than taking other alternatives to ensure your day off.

Thanks for the replies,I suppose the only way of guaranteeing that time off.without showing my hand is to phone in sick which is, nt really what I would like to do.But as the old saying goes
