Postal bags thrown out for mail trollies

THE face of postal deliveries in Swadlincote is set to change as modern day mail will see the arrival of trollies.

The Royal Mail is making some changes to the way it delivers mail in Swadlincote over the next few weeks and from this week, residents will see postmen and women ditching their usual letter satchels in favour of a larger trolley to cope with parcel deliveries.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: “The way in which we communicate with each other has changed dramatically. Unfortunately, fewer letters are now posted every day and Royal Mail needs to organise its delivery routes to be as efficient as possible. We also deliver more larger items and so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely.

The new equipment also reduces the risk of injury to our postmen and women from carrying heavier mail bags.”

Residents in DE11 and DE12 postcodes will be receiving a letter detailing any changes, and local elected representatives and business groups are also being advised of these changes.

These changes will require a period of adjustment for staff. However, Royal Mail will be doing everything possible to maintain a high level of service and thanks customers for their understanding.

Paul Whitehouse, Royal Mail delivery director, said: “We are proud of the high regard in which our postmen and women are held in Swadlincote. The changes to delivery routes will mean that a member of our local and experienced team will still be delivering to our customers in Swadlincote.”

However, the company does not expect there to be changes to delivery routes in Swadlincote and has confirmed there will be no job losses or changes to job roles as the transformation of the company into modern day times continues.

It never happens. As soon as a revision comes in all you see is trolleys parked up and postmen still carrying satchels. Same as van share. Park van bags on back. The only way to enforce the use of lwt and hct is to have satchels wihout a strap on it. So it can only be used with the lwt. But its not about health and safety, its about cost cutting
