10 new posties being recruited at my DO

Been told today that we are to have 10 new part time posties join the fray soon. I am completely baffled by it as myself and other part timers are strugling to get O/T as it is. Why on earth take more people on and force other more experienced and competent people out of the door due to lack of work? I questioned the DOM about it and he just said, "don't worry, there'll always be O/T". Its alright for him, hes got a F/T job. I really am starting to wonder if this is RM's idea of getting shares back off part timers. Starve us of O/T, force us to resign and replace us with new posties that won't hold a stake in the company.... ching ching. Losing the will to live here

maybe you have loads of door to door contracts that need fulfilling as they keep us all in a job

so they would pay wages for all these part timers instead of your shares it would cost more to pay extra staff think about it

Sortings covered. I'm doing the odd half a walk here and there as well as lapsing. Its just strange that they've been cost cutting like mad over the last couple of months. Now all of a sudden they are taking 10 new starters on.

You will probably find your office has been carrying vacancies for a while and union rep has finally managed to get the vacancies filled and got your office back up to full strength, yes it will cut down on over time but will get the office running the way it is supposed to be planned to be running and thus should cut down on lapsing as well

In most offices i have worked in there seems to be a 10/1 chance that new starts stick with it for the month. So you have an extra"1" working part time postie in theory. They will be used as cover for other D.O.s when you start lapsing after next week.

They're 24 hour contracts working 5 out of 6 days, same as me. It really has got me thinking about my future now really. I'm 35 now and only got 9 months service in with RM. I know theres more chance of winning the lottery than getting a full time job. Do I stick it out or start thinking about another career move? Decisions decisions

You talk as though RM would benefit by 'receiving' your shares, if you resign. This is not the case. The shares of anyone who resigns, or is sacked ('bad leavers') do NOT revert to Royal Mai. Instead, they become part of a pool of unallocated shares held by the SIP trustees (Equiniti). The vast majority of that pool of shares will be used to make the 2nd allocation of free shares, due to be issued 'as soon as possible after the start of the 2014/15 financial year'. The amount of shares each qualifying employee will receive is 112. Although that could increase slightly, if lots of people leave or are sacked
