There’s a new campaign which is getting a lot of attention on the 38 Degrees Campaigns By You website.

Tomorrow MPs will be debating the possibility of re-naming the August bank holiday as "Margaret Thatcher Day". [1] But 38 Degrees member Louise has started a petition against the idea, and it already has over 75,000 signatures.

Thousands of 38 Degrees members have already commented on the petition on the 38 Degrees facebook page. [2] It’s something some people seem to feel incredibly strongly about. What do you think? Should we have a Margaret Thatcher Day?

Here’s what petition starter Louise says:

“My name is Louise Wallace and I’m a mother of three and part time illustrator from Manchester. When I read on the BBC news that MPs were considering renaming the August Bank Holiday as ‘Margaret Thatcher Day’ I thought it was ridiculous.

Personally I disagree with everything that Margaret Thatcher stood for and I’d be offended if they took to renaming the bank holiday after such a destructive and demoralising woman.

I remember when she was in power and think celebrating her in this way forgets all the harm she did to mining communities and many others. I had friends that were on some of the mining protests and I remember the way the police handled them.

Often I feel like MPs are living in a dream world, they don’t see what happens at the other end of their cuts and the decisions that they make. The idea of renaming our bank holiday as Margaret Thatcher day is another classic example of their lack of understanding of how the public feel.”
