There are some areas where people can be part time for 15-20 years before having the seniority to apply for the rare full time vacancies that come up.
There can be full time staff who will have over 10 years before retirement (subject to health).
Also more and more full time vacancies are being dropped to part time status when made available.
In some cases vacant duties are not advertised but are 'given' to individuals using the excuse of dda.
There can be many reasons why individuals remain stuck in part time roles that are beyond their control.

So what would you like to take over from Seniority in a job which the skill levels required for each duty is exactly the same, and which for all intents and purposes everyone can meet with ease.

Translation of original Post: He is upset because someone who has 18 months more seniority than them, has been successful in applying for a duty. They think this is wrong because the successful applicant knows only one duty well, whilst he knows just about every duty.

Of course he has missed the obvious point that if managers were able to select people to fill vacancies on nearly anything except seniority then he wouldn't have been selected anyway. After all its far cheaper and easier to keep an experienced reserve in post than train a new one from scratch.

although seniority is not the ideal I would hate the alternative that being allowing a manager to pick who gets what, and with quite a few managers relations working in the business already imagine the nice duties they would be suitable for and no way of stopping it, no seniority for me as it is the only tamper proof way

If seniority was scrapped & there were a number of full time duties up for grabs,I wonder who would get the nod?
