Cutting Off

Had a big laugh on Saturday where we were all told to lapse 2 duties on section and take all the packets. The weather forecast was very poor (as the management would have known) and the amount of trayed mail and loose mail was anything but light. The kicker was management's kind offer of 'job and knock'. Leaving time is scheduled @ 0855 (with a final end time on shift of 1410). My partner and I left depot at 0905 (10 minutes behind already). After completing the lapsing first the time was now 0930 (so now effectively 30 mins behind). We did not take about 6 largish items (thankfully) and duly got back to the depot just after 1400. After sorting out our returns and the kill-offs we were right on 1410. So much for 'job and knock'.

My questions are as follows.

(1) Had we got out say another 15 minutes later are we within our rights to refuse point blank to take out the lapsing even if management insist on it being taken out? I am not going to go down the route of working 'a little bit over' if this involves this extra lapsing/absorption. It seems crazy that folk have to choose between lapsing (on another duty) and taking out all parcels on your own delivery which happens with increasing regularity.

(2) Is there a set procedure for cut-offs or is this another area at individual DOM's discretion?

Don't refuse to take out the lapsing, they could have you for refusing to undertake a reasonable request

Take the lapsing out and do that last, that way if you do have to cut off, it is not your round that is effected.
Also, don't forget to inform your DOM that you might be cutting off, otherwise he could also have you for wilful delay.

easiest thing to do is tell them you will do it when you get back to the office if you have time. which you have already stated you dont have time. problem solved. you will find that it has already been delivered by the time you get back anyway as managers wont risk having to go out on delivery that late on a saturday

when was your 20 minutes at the end? you said you got back to office for 1400 did your kill offs etc and finish time was 1410?

Also the 6 items you left in office, should have went out, your not allowed to stream mail like this, if that means that you have to take longer and cut off at end of duty then so be it, its doms problem

as for cutting off procedure, its been mentioned above, you are supposed to inform dom as soon as you becoma aware that you wont be able to complete on time and then he decides how he wants to deal with it, he can offer you OT, if you dont want it he can then either pay OT to someone else to do it, or if someone has time left in their duty he could get them to do it(the guys on job and finish would be ideal candidates), lastly he can either deliver it himself which is taking OT away from posties and should be opposed by rep or fail the mail, which rep should insist that the failed mail is counted and reported properly

But in reality he will squint his face, count your callrate, tell you it is under the model week and suggest you have a performance issue and will have a word in the morning if dont complete.

you do it whatever way your told to by the dom, its his decision and is covered under the "as directed" clause in your duty 318

Yes, we do our lapsing and someone else finishes our van share. Does it matter which bit you deliver?

again its not your decision which bit get priority its the DOMs he is the one getting paid to make those decisions

Yuh I see what you mean but as I have signed for that duty surely I am expected to complete it in the given time if I am able to.The lapsed part should be the if I have time.

nope you signed for the duty which included the phrase "as direct" in those words or something similar, if dom wants you to do lapse first and fail your duty then its his decision and not much you can do about it except cut off and make sure he is reporting any failures correctly
