Contract extensions

Hello,

I started working as a postman on the 3rd Nov last year on a 3 month temp contract. It was up on the 3rd of Feb, but nobody mentioned anything and I was still on the rotas so just carried on working. Today i received a new temporary contract in the post, but it only runs until the 20th March, not another 3 months. Is this a bad sign? Jut before the new financial year, at a time when everyone at work tells me the post begins to quieten down. Any advice would be brilliant, due to worrying about not having a job as of next month.

Its nothing unusual. Its been like that for me for about 18months. Others in the same boat too

It may be a bad sign there again it may not. 2 of my colleagues had their contracts run out in January then had another renewal only for a month, they were then pulled into the office and told they were no longer needed after that one runs out at the end of this month. Hopefully that isn't the case for you.

Don't know bout march being a quiet month,,, usually one of the busiest in our office

Thanks for your replies. Just have to hope and wait then by the sounds of it. Just thought it was very strange as we're always short staffed and I get rang for overtime every time I have a day off. Can't even have a chat to my manager about it because he's off for the next three weeks!

AJ1987 do you mean that you kept having extensions for shorter periods than three months? That was the bit that worried me, only getting an extra 6 weeks added when I was told that the contract would just keep getting renewed every 3 months and that in the end everyone (subject to performance, sickness etc) gets taken on.

Yes mate. Sometimes I'll have a contract through that's 3 months then when that's up might have one for a month. I've even had one through that's for about 3days! Been going on like that for not far off two years now. Theres a couple of us in my office in the same boat. When I was employed I was told it was a 3 month rolling contract..

The revision is about to go live in my office pretty soon and theres talk of us on fixed term contracts not being needed but fingers crossed as my office is like yours, always short staffed and ringing on days off etc

Cheers mate that's put my mind at rest a bit more! Never worked anywhere like it, keeping it's workers on edge constantly. You'd think the union would have got involved by now, because its a horrible situation to be in.

I'm in the same boat has you started in November on a four month contract and yesterday got a new contract through the door yesterday for a month taking me to april. I'm just hoping their just taking it to the financial year and give me a year one at least. I can live in hope lol.

It must be to keep millions in work in the HR dept! What other company would keep sending out contracts to thousands of workers that last 6 weeks or less. I am in the same boat after 2 years
