Average miles covered by a postman per day?
Im on a controlled weight plan at the moment due to eating at the wrong times (ie on the sofa after work). I want to work out (also out of interest) the average miles covered by a postman per day to adjust my calorie intake. 580 houses are on my round, average sized driveways. Anyone tried it with a pedometer?

Pedometers are crap.
Use mapmyrun or something similar to measure the streets and then add on the length of the drives (x2 because you walk up and down them.)
I walk about 4 miles/day out on delivery.

If you manage to get 30plus years service in, then you probably would have walked the equivalent round the world!,,,

560 houses. 8 miles. (And it's all up and down hills). The problem is that you don't burn off as many calories as you think you should be - try one of the online calculators for a rough idea.

I used an app to measure it on my walks. It varied between 9km and 12.5km depending on the walk and the day. Not sure what that is in miles.

About 1100 on our P&L, a lot of flats mixed in with houses..so we''re up and down stairs quite a bit and we do around 12 miles per day min. Most we've walked was about 14 miles!
Used a Strave app on my phone, uses GPS for distance, steps taken etc.
Try this lot: http://www.strava.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (I downloaded my app from Google Play, as they do a few different ones.)

According to an app I've used a few times I walk 4miles/1:52hrs on a light day, 4.8miles/2.54hrs on a heavy day. Never realised before how much extra walking time there is on a heavier day (almost a whole extra mile just of driveways), let alone extra time prepping before even getting out.

Have you got any good tips from your weight control plan?
I seem to have the same eating habits as you... don't have any breakfast or eat anything at all in work as snacking just seems to have the effect of making me feel even more hungry, so I starve myself all day then eat like a b*****d as soon as I get home!
The result being that despite all the exercise I get on the job I've still got a belly.

Re: Average miles covered by a postman per day?
I spent the past 5 months working inside on the revision and saw my weight go up by 10 1lbs. Its the odd snacking and sugar in fizzy drinks that gets you plus the walking really give you a hunger so you tend to over eat. Everyone is different but by monitoring what you eat and drink the walking should burn it off. I would not recommend any of the these silly 5 day diets as they are not designed for people walking 8-10 miles a day. If there is any secret i think it lies in the fact that you need to try to balance your calorie intake throughout the day to give your body a better chance of burning it off. I ve been back on delivery for a couple of weeks and have lost a steady 2 1lb a week.wacko74 wrote:Have you got any good tips from your weight control plan?

This is what I try to eat.
Breakfast 4.30am
Cannot really eat anything at this time so have found instant porridge sachets in various flavours with nuts etc which you can mix with milk (or hot water) into a cup and then drink like a thick smoothy. Sounds weird but actually quite nice.
At frame 8am. Fruit.
Normally 2 small oranges. Cold juice.
Meal relief before delivery about 9.20.
Couple of sandwiches and a banana. Cup of tea. Sweetners
Home around 2-2.30pm
Tea and a treat 2x choc biscuits or cake.
Dinner 6pm.
Normally pasta based. Juice or no sugar lemonade. Sat /wed 1/2 bottle of wine.
I ve also been avoiding the odd beer here and there as that goes straight to the gut.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

It varies between what type of delivery you are performing and the amount of mail you are taking out..
Pedometers are not really accurate as they calculate each step as a full stride. Prob ok if you jogging but as a postie you will be climbing steps up to doors and it will count them as well. They are ok as a rough guide though. On my old round I used to go around 22-28k steps depending on the weight of mail. As a guide my misses who has a office based job borrowed it and recorded just 5.5k. for the day.
I ve used a gps app on my phone and that works out better. This recorded between 8-10 miles.

Re: Average miles covered by a postman per day?
I've used Mapmywalk and got around 11 miles, but 1.7 miles of that was driving between loops so just over 9 miles. I'm slightly doubtful of that though, I suspect the phone moving in my pocket was registering extra distance on the app.
It may be better in a shirt pocket (if anyone still wears the shirts) as there would be less overall movement than a trouser pocket.

Not some of the posties I knowOnAFlyer wrote:there would be less overall movement than a trouser pocket.
Ok serious mode.
Your phone uses gps which is only accurate to around 1 meter so I doubt it would make any real difference. Mind you there are some guys in my office with very long pockets when it comes to getting the coffee's in.

Re: Average miles covered by a postman per day?
Ok, Pedometers are accurate if you set them up right. The way I did it is to find a country walk with mileposts and set the pedometers stride rate so it matches the mile posts. I have tested all the walks at our office and they vary between 7.9 and 9 miles. This is 100% accurate so I would say that the other estimates of 4 to 12 miles are wildly inaccurate. This is from the lightest town walk (7.9) to the longest (9) which is a monster round and takes about 4 and a half hours. I don't know how accurate calorie counters are on pedometers as these will vary person to person but a rough estimate is 100 calories per mile.
