Moving from being a reserve to cover

Ive been with RM for nearly a year now as a 5 day annual leave reserve which is where everybody usually starts. Ive been told im next in line as a 3 day cover duty person covering 3 set duties a week with stable days off. Do I wait til someone leaves or is it just an automatic process after being a reserve for a while? Theres guys in our office that were made cover men after 1 year and also my friend who works in another office was on cover duty after one year's service also. I know there is no timescale but does it depend on the office or for someone to leave.

No it's not automatic ,there has to be a rest day cover duty vacant for you to get it ,but as you have been told your next in line when one becomes available it should go to you

Wow one year? Quite a few staff in my office have 10yrs+ and don't know what duty they're doing from one week to the next. Leave reserve is all 10 years gets you in a repick.

13 yrs ive been a reserve for mate.Wouldnt change it for anything.Gets boring doing same rounds every week.Variety its the spice of life.As for different days off ive just had 3 sats in row off next two weeks ive got two tues in a row off.

I was after 7 months but taken off it in January but have just been put on another one. The only trouble is though 2 of the days they come in on their days off so I get chucked anywhere.
