Advice

Post by gand »

Hi. so I work in a division in which feel that I am being discriminated against, since my 17 years or so in royal I have always tried to do the job to the best of my ability and the way royal mail want's me to do the job using the proper tools in which they supply me. My problem is I work in a division where around 90% of the work force do not do the job the way royal mail wants it to be done. i.e. not using trolleys, coming, early not taking breaks wee all no these kind of people. My problem is that because I am using my trolley taking my breaks and so on, means that most days I am the only one who has to cut off. which means I am now in a position were mangers and collogues now seem to think that I am lazy and a trouble maker because if I try to do the job the way royal mail wants and I cant complete while all the rest can. After 2 years of bullying I am now forced to not use my trolley which I worry about as I believe that not using it is having a detrimental affect on my health and safety. its also got to a stage now were my own supposed collogues will not work with me now and run crying to the boss if they see they are on my van share, my boss then moves them of my van share and puts someone on who will work with me. every day my performance is compared to others who do not do the job as its meant to be done and as most start before there time and I am made out to be the bad postman. I have tried the union on a few occasions but they cant seem to or want to help. any advice on what I should do about this? I was thinking about e mailing Moya? thanks.

How far did you take it with the union? If your office rep was no use did you try the area rep?

I think you've answered your own question since you've already tried the union route with no joy.

It's something the union needs to address, If you're going to ask members to "do the job properly" you have to put all your resources into protecting those who do. You also have to make agreements that encourage working all paid hours, if necessary accept monitoring of work hours and if that might not be popular with some sections of the membership then so be it.
The union is here to protect jobs and protect members who protect their job, It isn't here to protect early starters, early finishers or ghost docket, the sooner some members and reps realise that the better.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Depending on the relationship you have with your DOM/DSM e mailing moya could have the reverse effect. What your DOM reports back to moyas team will hold sway over any truth you would have reported. Although some folk have had positive results/feedback from the ' just slay them team'

Personally, I wouldn't cut off, I would book the docket, make the others realise what they are losing out on by cutting corners.

Hi gand, I am in exactly the same position as you.
Since park and loop I have had to put up with being told I'm slow by colleagues and manager because I use a trolley, don't come in early etc. I got so fed up with it that I emailed Moya and put in a grievance with the back up of my area union rep. I did get an answer to both and it's in the process of being looked into. It's really hard to stick to it and not be bullied into doing the same as everyone else, but I can't physically do the job any other way, so I have to stick to it, and it's just made me more determined to stick to it.
I also put one sixth of door to doors in the frame and deliver them each day. I work with different partners and they accept that they have to do it even though they don't like it. I also feel like I'm now the "troublemaker" just for doing the job properly and I feel like the manager is watching my every move just waiting for me to do something wrong to give them an excuse to get rid of me, so I don't take any chances just do everything by the book.
The whole thing is unbelievable really, Royal Mail is so corrupt, but the union will back you up on this.
Good luck

If your so called colleagues are working outwith procedures that have been agreed between the union and management then if things go pear shaped then they are leaving themselves open to disciplinary action and your DOM who has turned a blind eye to them cutting corners will probably be the first to bring a charge against them. Starting before their duty time they are not covered by the company's liability insurance and if injured they would have no right to compensation as they are not officially on duty. Your so called colleagues obviously did not attend any of the Diversity training and must think thing the Dignity and Respect Charter was signed at Runnymede. Your workplace breaks are governed by law in the worktime directive and your DOM is breaching this directive by not ensuring his staff and receiving proper rest periods and this then becomes a H&S matter. The HTC were introduced for mail hygiene and security then you should not abandon this if you prefer this system in order to compete with your colleagues. Unwilling to work with you is indirect discrimination. All these taking into consideration do your duty in the proper manner and f--k them. :coolr

Given the number of posties that have gone off sick with back problems, you will think that managers should be encouraging folks to use the proper equipments especially the LWT.

There have been some of the older folks that were used to bikes and no carrying weight on shoulder or back gone on long-term sick... Some now use the trolley all the time - and their regular partners has to accept that fact; some of the reserves might not like it but these folks are normally older and more senior - so tough!

It is a tough decision but you having things in writing to either Moya or the CWU HQ might help your case in future if thinks turn ugly...

Why have you not gone down the grievance procedure line? Yes we all know how grievances are handled by Royal Mail, but stick enough of them in and follow them through to a final conclusion. You have right on your side and if you fall into the trap of giving in and not sticking to procedures you leave yourself open to even further abuses and not being protected by Royal Mails Employer Liability Insurance.

diarise (if thats a word) everything.
If you are being compared to others , then i would note others failures or shortcomings.
if you are compared to one who comes in early name them, name the one who runs or doesn't use the trolly.
Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP

You have tried your rep and not got anywhere. Find out who your area H&S rep is and give him / her a call and explain the situation.

I would play the I am concerned I am not doing the job correctly and am worried card!

Say to your DOM, you are concerned your colleagues think you are not working correctly as you are 'slow' and simply ask him to accompany you on a round one day. Do the job as it should be done and at the end ask where you are going wrong.

Tell him it worries you, you don't want to slow your colleagues down and you try your hardest to be a good postie. Let him put his foot in it! :Very Happy
If you do a job too well, you’ll get stuck with it.
