Average Wages For London

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I am currently working as a postman in the West Midlands and I am trying to get a transfer to a branch in London. At the moment I am on a 34 hour per week contract, yet the only jobs currently available in the city are 25 hours per week. I cant afford to take such a big hit to my income, but did hear that London posties may be entitled to London weighting. If the average wage for working in London is higher than my current hourly rate, I may afford to be able to cut my hours down and go ahead with the transfer. I know pay is a usually a private matter, but if anyone would be willing to discuss this matter with me ,it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

hourly rate is same nationwide and yes you will get london weighting but will not be anywhere the loss of 9 hours pay

Oh ok thankyou. Any idea roughly how much London weighting is? I'm guessing it is paid separately to your hourly rate then? The only info I can find on London weighting is outdated and vague, so was hoping to put an actual figure on it

Thats not including the delivery supplement, and of course the pay increases. On these figures you should be on about £12.68 an hour after April + the delivery supplement.

Wrong way round... WE deliver half of TNT's mail in London.

Outer London take home is about £340-£350 f/t and probably about another £20 on top of that for Inner London.

Don't forget that the whole reason for having a London Weighting in the first place is because the cost of living in London is notoriously higher than in the rest of the country.

You'll need to factor in higher living costs when you do your sums.

Yep, especially housing and travel.

And also bear in mind that depending on where you are based it's likely that you won't be getting any ot or sa except for a couple of weeks before xmas.

Devon housing costs are nowhere near London's. Probably half from what I've seen on TV programs and property websites.

I did a search on primelocation.com property finder website for properties between £150-200k. In London there are only studio, 1 and 2 bedroom flats for less than £200k. There are a few houses starting at £200k in Barking and Dagenham. These are 2 or 3 bedroom terraced ex-local authority houses on council estates.
In Exeter there were 204 properties in that price range, mainly 3 and 4 bedroom houses, of different types which looked pretty good.

£250k would get you a 4-5 bed detached here, and £450k a veritable mansion. Why anyone who isn't rich would want to live in London is beyond me, its largely a sh*thole as well unless you've got serious money to buy (Yes I've been all over London as I have relatives there!)
