21 days annual leave owed - not allowed to have it!!
Year after year I have accumulated 21 days of annual leave that is still outstanding due to bank holidays during holidays/days off etc, yet whenever I ask whether I can actually have any of it I'm told flatly 'NO' and that I have no chance of taking it. Yet when I enquire whether management get to have all their allocation, yes of course they do. Also people who buy extra weeks get to have all of theirs, which is fine but surely before they should be allowed to do that priority must be given to people who still have weeks of their original entitlement to take??
I'm told that peolpe buying extra weeks are given priority as 'it's an important part of the budget' and that I must simply keep amassing these days until a chance comes up to take them. Well its been years now and still no sign of a chance of me being able to have this time off that's owed to me and that I believe I'm completely entitled to.
Question is what can I do about it? Feel completely powerless and I know I'm not the only one in our office and I'm sure this situation is happening nationwide. Any advice?

Get them to pay you for it. If no joy get your rep on to it. It's ridiculous that the asshats have allowed it to build up like this without addressing the problem. It may be that you could take the odd day here and there rather than large blocks which wouldn't f**k the bosses plans up too much.

They cannot stop you taking your 28 days statutory annual leave entitlement. Why are you not putting in a grievance if they are saying different?

Re: 21 days annual leave owed - not allowed to have it!!
I have had my pick of 4 weeks holiday for this year and indeed have done done every year. However, my entitlement as a 30hour part timer is 23 days, and these odd 3 days are what I can never seem to be allowed to book, year after year, and along with days off clashing with bank holidays (which I'm supposed to get back) the total outstanding is now 21 days.
Is it possible to be paid for them? To be honest I'm not fussed whether I'm paid or get to take them all off, I just want the situation rectified one way or the other as they are lawfully owed to me but I don't know how to get anything sorted when I get brickwalled by management.

In order for you to accumulate outstanding leave of 21 days when your yearly holiday entitlement is 23 days then this must have been going on for a considerable period. I was under the impression that all holiday leave must be taken by the end of that financial year ( 5th April) but 5 days of that leave can be carried on into the next financial year. I am surprised that your book room on supplying you with your annual leave card has not been pressing you to reduce your accumulated days and would suggest that you make contact with the duty officer in the book room to have this looked into. If no joy then a call to his boss or the Employee Relations officer in your area or as previously suggested a grievance form.macthejaffa wrote:I have had my pick of 4 weeks holiday for this year and indeed have done done every year. You will be very lucky to get any previous years days holidays owed or paid back. You left it way too long, holidays worked on year to year.macthejaffa wrote:Year after year I have accumulated 21 days of annual leave that is still outstanding due to bank holidays during holidays/days off etc, yet whenever I ask whether I can actually have any of it I'm told flatly 'NO' and that I have no chance of taking it. My advice - Chase up any days you are owed for this year, if they cant fit them in before financial year end (31st march) they may carry over to next year or pay etc. (But check for this adjustment on holiday sheet).
Keep track of your holidays very closely from now on, And chase them up as soon as problems arise (sickness, bank holidays, day off clashes etc). -

In no circumstances may leave from the standard national entitlements be reduced, neither may untaken leave or other time off in lieu be “sold” or converted into pay.

I'm sure the new current agreement states you are only supposed to carry no more than 5 days forward, any more than that and management must make a conservative effort to use your holiday and that includes taking time off during Xmas pressure.

I heard a rumour that posties in my area were not being allowed to book any more A/L before end of March... So I cancelled a week off in Feb, and am now carrying over 2 weeks to next years leave ! There is a lot of unhappy posties here because they want to book A/L.pod25 wrote:I'm sure the new current agreement states you are only supposed to carry no more than 5 days forward, any more than that and management must make a conservative effort to use your holiday and that includes taking time off during Xmas pressure.

Get the Area Rep involved.
And deal with your managers boss.
