Purchase of annual leave refused?

Hi there I hope someone can help me, last year and this year I have applied for the additional holiday purchase to bring my leave to 30days a year (I need it for child care reasons) and subsequently have had to have days off unpaid.,on the first occasion I was only given 2 and a half days bringing my total to 25 days although I had applied for the full 30day entitlement. I was new at that time and was told I was unsuccessful this year for full entitlement and that I should try again next year. So I did and now I have been told I can't extend the period due to operational issues! I spoke to HR today and they said there are no reasons why I should be refused and that I should report a grievance against my manager! ( which I really don't want to do) when I spoke to my manager again and told him what HR had said he maintained his point on operational issues!

Now I'm confused and not sure what to do, can someone please help me?

Never heard of purchased annual leave being refused... put in a grievance...

That is an odd one. Never heard of it being refused before. How can they object when it doesn't cost them anything? Have you asked your rep to look into it?

Sounds like your manager is just being a dick!

Just a thought but you may be able to get more unpaid leave if you wave the family friendly card at them. Works out the same financially as buying extra holiday time only I think they have to be more flexible in allowing it? Might be worth a shot?

That is unusual, but taking unpaid leave and purchasing annual leave is essentially the same thing just without the cost spread throughout the year.

Thankyou all for the replies, I have once again put in for the request and will inform you of the outcome. Hopefully I won't have to put a grievance in as it'll probably create an awkward working environment! I will approach my onsite union rep and discuss further!
