Just a rant

Post by Barbel »

I'm getting so sick of smug long timers who have had their own rounds for 20 years + mocking reserves who do different rounds every day for being too slow and not finishing early. Heard from a colleague today who I was working with was told by an old timer, 'Good luck, you'll be out all day with that one' because he was paired up with me and I'd never done the round before. Also what pee's me off is you'll get taken off a job because they moan to the managers they don't want you with them as they're used to being back at the office at midday. These are people who doorstep parcels, leave specials with neighbours and rip stickers off recorded's so they don't have to waste time writing out slips and basically do the job properly. They get away with it of course because they've been there donkey's years, but If I were to do it I'll be out of the door in the blink of an eye. I would love to challenge them to doing a different job every day for a week and see how early they get back to the office then they might not be so smug. Before anyone says 'They were reserves once' No they weren't, they started back in the day when they were given their own round and have been on it ever since. It really does make you feel like you're a piece of s*it and useless even though I work damn hard to do the job properly. I can't wait for the day where everyone is treated equal whether you've been there one year or twenty but I doubt it will happen soon. Ok rant over, I feel better now. :Very Happy

f**k um mate you carry on doing the job as it should be done these people do not realise how they are playing into the hands of royal mail dont think tthat managers dont know what they do cos they do know but as long as mails delivered they are happy BUT when the s**t hits the fan and managers are under pressure to cut the workforce these people become easy targets for the sack rather than paying out to them for vrs its the same in every office but all i would say to you is just keep doing the job as it should be done and you will be safe in your job . another thing is when jobs are reviewed and records checked and they see them finishing an hour or hour and half early every day and then decide they can do extra on their delivery they will be the ones shouting but the proof is on record some people can not see in front of their noses.

Some senior guys are w*****s but the truth is they were probably junior w*****s as well.
Take your time, do it right and see how many veins you can get to pop.
It passes the time.

I'd like to see that one down in writing, Is that "operational needs"? Moving you because Bob the Knob wants to finish early?
Would I f**k move. :cuppa

Posties having a word with the manager about who they do not want to work with happens... The problem for a junior (part time) reserve is that you will not know directly why you have been moved... As you get moved for operational reasons as well... The other thing is Ft staff have more interaction with manager because they are in earlier than a PTer and they do IPS and all sorts...

What annoyed me when we finally had a repick and folks had to move to their new round was the fact that some senior members (Ft&Pt) wanted 3 days training and some even had a full week of usually 'Reserves' holding their hands on the New rounds. the reserves basically became unpaid coaches...

Posties ripping off Signed For stickers is something that I knew about many years ago until very recently when I worked with someone from the Callers Office; he also doorstepped - found out a packet was left outside the day after when I went to deliver a large packet with another partner... Why do people take such a risk?

Walking on lawns, driving right up to customer's doors, doorstepping, running, putting letters on the lip of letter boxes like paperboys/girls, signing for Signed For and Specials and basically trying to get done just to get home an hour or so early - what is so important that is happening from 12.30-1.45 (finish time is usually 2.48pm)

Anyways, you are probably better off not working with people that are going to rush you or get you in trouble with bad practices...

Paired with a full time conman runner today. He was really cutting corners in an effort to get finished early on a walk that I usually go over my time on. The reason? He was paired with another runner on this walk earlier in the week and they'd managed to finish 2 hours early. The boss said he'd not pay him for any subsequent o/t as a consequence. I thought the bellend was going to explode as I took my time, he resorted to doing parcels on loops we'd get to later instead of waiting for me, so as to shave precious minutes off. It didn't work as I stood waiting to be picked up longer than any time he saved delivering.

New walk for me next week and my future partner has already asked incredulously, why I wouldn't be starting earlier than scheduled. It's looking like it'll be a laugh a minute.

These people that finish early should be made to throw in door to doors for the reserves that are struggling.

I've seen similar things happen. But also I've seen guys on 25 hour contracts being given lapsing to use their hours yet some full timers are going home at 1230. These part time guys are paid till 2pm in our office and are made to work till thrn because of lapsing/not having door to doors put together. So why aren't full timers having to do bigger lapsing or do these door to doors?

I have my own round and rarely finish early as I'm on a longer walk. However there are some guys especially those on hct walks who are finished ridiculously early and waltz home while royal mail is paying out overtime because people aren't finishing on time.

Yes they were. When was this mythical golden age all you noobies seem to know about even though you weren't there???? :hmmmm

So you are moaning about long termers finishing early and yet other posters on these boards moan about them not being fast enough suggesting they should move over and let youngsters have thier jobs? Why are long termers such a target for hostility when ultimately your working conditions are dictated by your employers not your work mates.?

Work to your time, work at a pace comfortable to you. Ignore the jibes. Go home and relaaaaaax! :arrrghhh

As a long timer ish (28 years) I waited 10 till I got my own walk and about another 10 till I got one that was deemed an ok walk.I don't know where you've got the idea that years ago everyone that was new got their own walk!
Any married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing.

It took me 10 plus years to get my own round and before that I would cover different deliveries each week and when I fist started I would do different deliveries every day. I could be one end of the city one day and the other end of the city the next and you were still expected to get back on time to be able to do a second delivery. In my experience it's the new guys who run round and cut corners and the old timers doing the job correctly. I don't think it matters what office you work in you'll always get idiots who want to shaft their fellow workers and the job, it just varies from office to office if it's senior guys or newbies.

I am coming up for 26 years now and have a basic 4.30hrs HCT duty which is no better or worse than any other. I do know where your coming from with the old time grumpy flyers who will cut every corner to get home 30 mins early to sit on the sofa and watch crap afternoon tv. Its madness.

It does take time but most of these guys have been caught ripping the job up or become so frustrated they have ended up leaving. A few will end up going long term sick with injury trying to beat the system, which of course you cant.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

It's the long termers who tend to do the job properly and slower in my office.

As for refusing to work with certain people, I've done it - not because they were new but because they were useless. One 20 year man I worked with took 2.45 to do two loops, and he used to do the duty! In the time he did that I did 6 loops and we only just got done in time. Another guy was late back to the van so I took an extra loop, when I got back he was sat in the back eating sandwiches and drinking coffee.

It's not always quite as clear cut as someone wanting to finish early. I'm happy working to time, but not when that entails carrying someone by doing far more than half the walk.

I've refused to work with a couple of people like this. This one old guy stunk of ciggies and chain smoked and insisted on smoking in the van like it was his god given right despite me being a non smoker and asking him not to. I even threatened to report him which he laughed off so I did then that caused a load agro for a bit. Numpty lino has tried to pair him with me again next week as my usual park and loop buddy is off on a cruise.

You sound like you have not been with RM very long and you fail to understand how RM rules work ,see below.
No .1 Rule in any office Everybody is treated equally (Except some people we will call the "chosen ones" are treated more equally than others )
Anyways, you are probably better off not working with people that are going to rush you or get you in trouble with bad practices...
