I once talked to a 600 driver who worked on Railmail for 20 years. He reconed it was hot and stuffy down there and the work could be tough unloading the trains. They also got filthy with the old dusty mail sacks and grease on the locks. He felt he was better off above ground although he did say they had a unique camaraderie to get the job done.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

I knew about the underground mail rail since I started working for RM, I thought it was fascinating, running under the feet of the Yuppies and their mobiles/filofaxes , I did wonder if it can take passengers, looks like I may get a chance to find out :)
