transfer from permanent position to a temporary position.

I have got a transfer all sorted, but I am worried as the position I am moving to is at present a six month fixed term contract, but I am a permanent employee. Can I take my permanent status with me, or will I become a temporary member of staff? Given that all positions seem to be advertised as temporary around me, presumably this issue often occurs with transfers.

The new job is close to my home and I will save so much money that I would take it anyway, but obviously will look to preserve my permanent status if it's at all possible.

Just for info, both positions are 25 hour contracts.

depending on the reason for it being temporary you might need to go onto a temp contract best to contact the office concerend and as exactly why its a temp contract being offered, ie if there is a pending revision where they are intending to reduce the head count by not renewing temp contracts i would not be accepting the transfer there

I appreciate what you're saying, but the office I'm in at present is so far from home that with travel and childcare it's not sustainable for me to remain for much longer. So I'd be looking for a new job soon in any case. If it's a straight choice between finding a new job now or getting a temp contract and carrying on being a postie for the time being at an office near my house, it might be worth it to me.

If you've been employed by RM for more than four years you will remain permanent. The law states that temp contracts can only last four years maximum. It doesn't matter which office you're at, it goes on your seniority within the company as a whole. For example if senior members were to join your DO due to MC closures and duties were advertised they would get the jobs over less senior employees. That's how it worked in our DO anyway.

Only 18 months so far unfortunately. But I'm optimistic about prospects at the new office. I get the impression that if I wait for a transfer to a permanent position I'll still be where I am in 3 years time, I think I'd rather take my chances closer to home. It's a bit of a gamble, but at least things will be much easier for the next 6 months.
