Throw out Royal Mail's no-strike deal in CWU ballot

CWU union members in Royal Mail were set to begin voting on the deal their union has reached with bosses as Socialist Worker went to press. The ballot had been due to start on Thursday of last week but was delayed.

Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, is urging workers to vote yes. But he admitted there had been “relentless budget cuts, job losses and an increase in variable workloads” in the run-up to the privatisation of Royal Mail.

Accepting the deal will only make matters worse and members should reject it.

The deal talks of working with Royal Mail to build a “can do culture” and “improving efficiency”. This will mean increased workloads and more pressure for workers.

As one worker in Cambridge told Socialist Worker, “It’s outrageous. It doesn’t deal with the problems of deliveries. It’s the same as the last deal, where issues still haven’t been resolved.”

And the deal states that Royal Mail can withdraw the agreement under what it calls “exceptional circumstances”. One of these is if the union calls a national strike.

The agreement will be reviewed again in 2019, so this is effectively a no-strike deal for five years. This would be disastrous.

Merlin Reader, a CWU rep ECDO in London, told Socialist Worker in a personal capacity, “If the deal goes ahead it will allow privatisation where it has been suggested in writing.”

Local as in a DO - probably not. An MC or other strategic function, its not very clear but probably unlikely if its a short term dispute.

What you really mean is you and the mates you hang about with have said they will vote yes but then people do tend to hang about with..."like minds".

Socialist shirker - none of them have a job and for the people who do they just want strikes all the time where's the common sense in that. Either come up with an alternative rather than a constant negative or go away.

I presume hes referring to section 4.11 in the Exceptions section of the Legal Contract.?

im voting no. decided that a good while ago. our dom gave us a briefing a few days ago and he urged us to vote yes. thats enough to set alarm bells ringing.

Doesnt matter what the workload is ,doesnt matter if its 10 lots of door to doors endless absorbtion its still 39 hrs no more no less ,Do the job properly dont start early go home on time ,how hard can it be?

All those that won't and don't do the job properly will vote yes, of all those that perform the job correctly, half will vote no and half will vote yes. That is my prediction based on 100% turnout. Since it will probably be a 52% turnout anyway it will be 35% of the 100% vote yes and 20% of them no. The rest wont bother voting since there it little left of the backbone the union used to have in delivery offices. (there is obviously no science involved in these figures).
