Royal Mail provided The Daily Telegraph with a list of 12 of the 92 "Spanish practices" which it claims are now at the core of the worst postal strike for nearly two decades:
* Two or three hour minimum daily overtime - so if 30 minutes of actual work is required and completed, then between two and three hours' payment is demanded;
Can't cover most of our walks without this. :P
* An additional allowance claimed for using particular vehicles - regardless of whether the individual has actually driven the vehicle;
They like taking our allowances off us don't they?
* Automatic overtime if mail volumes reach a certain level - regardless of how many ordinary working hours remain that day;
Ooo, what's automatic overtime? Is that my docket sheet I can't fill out anymore?
* If a delivery round is finished before the end of the paid shift, the employee expects to be able to go straight home. But if it takes 10 minutes longer two to three hours' over time is claimed;
Straight home? Pouch off, wait for bus, wait for bus, get home soaked some days. Claim overtime, claim bus fares...claim poverty :P
* Set overtime level is claimed at Christmas, even if there is no need for any additional hours and no extra hours are worked;
Oh, this one will go down well for Christmas agreements!
* An additional two hour payment on Easter Saturday - regardless of whether any work required;
Never worked Easter Saturday, and didn't even know it was called that!
* No flexibility between different parts of the same sorting office - if an employee sorts letters for a particular postcode, they will not sort for the adjacent postcode, even though both activities are often in the same room;
That's because they haven't been trained properly and there's not enough hours in the office to train them with lol.
* Signing in and out for a shift on arrival - so that no record of actual hours worked exists;
The new RFID cards should sort that out!
* Collection drivers expect overtime pay for doing collections outside usual route - even if it is done within usual working hours;
Well, Sundays are gone now so no bother :)
* Overtime to cover for an absent colleague - a full day is claimed, even if only half day needed and worked;
Eh? So the same duty length, but a much more efficient worker than a half-dead off sick person? Half day needed?
* Ban on any cross functional working, even of similar tasks under the same roof;
Cross functional working eh? Thought they'd split us all up?
* Additional meal and grace breaks as custom and practice
Ah yes, the 10 min grace break, don't have a break, stand at your frame till you fall you ungrateful money-grabbing postie who's getting shafted!

Most of those "Spanish Practices" are used by managers when you say you can't do overtime they try to bribe you with it.

Re: 92 Spanish Practices -Red Herrings -Misinformed don't un
haven't got a clue !, misinformed at worst , distorted at best but that's hardly a surprisetheflyingpostman wrote:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh ... ost309.xml :cfo
1 Set Overtime @ Christmas
You'd have to have staff sneaking off , can get slack on afternoons on lates , but later on you get battered but whose fault is that -sorry that's me being silly it's that awful union of course ?!
2 No flexibility in SO
Our new way of working where the mail is chased /followed round -total disaster that one , equipment not set up in time for waves , failure after failure
3 Will not sort for adjacent postcode
Must have been suspended umpteen times then , training is non-existent/p** poor
4 Signing in and out
My god have you just noticed !?-managers spend all thier time filling in hours recorded sheets & who asks for them ? 5 Automatic Docket -What ? , my experience is it's authorisation for overtime sheets , long weekly docket sheets , green dockets and the ONLY people who'll go for those 1-2hrs are AG's out of necessity , if the lifer F-T boys don't want the O-T , well so be it !. Many were quite happy to jump off the sinking ship before SDD as THEY DIDN'T WANT THE OVERTIME -fair enough ?
Sorry Crozier it's your manager's running these places 5 Only half day needed -so when he was fit he was only needed for a half day WTF
Also Crozier can you tell me why these spanish practices are the fault of the union and staff on the floor . Can we have the other 80 please , we're very interested .RM is badly run !, well I never !. Crozier's Senior Mgrs don't understand the business and apply business practices to what is a service , they then go for discredited market "solutions " like the NHS , Utilities but people take what Crozier says as gospel or fact

Ill admit that happens with me and Ill tell you why I do it Mr Crozier. its because the overtime rate isnt worth my while to work it straight up. I tell the managers before I do any overtime how much I want for doing it ie 2 hours (even tho it is 30,40 or 60 minutes work). The reason the manager agrees to it is because otherwise it doesnt get done, and if I dont do it for 2 hours then theyll have to pay someone else 2 hours IF theyre lucky enough to actually find anyone willing to do it. I really dont need the overtime and value my time off greatly, so dont tell me how much my own time is worth while your sitting on £1million a year for doing far less hours.
thank you

If you need a plumber at short notice he will more than likely charge you 50 pounds call out charge followed by 70 pounds an hour so if he does an hours work he will claim 120 pounds.
If we are required at short notice to do 1 hours work and the manager agrees to pay you 2 hours that is approx 18 pounds.
If Crozier thinks this job is so easy then why is there not a queue of people a mile long waiting to work for RM and I don't see posties driving around in flash cars and living in big houses in fact most struggle to make ends meet.
Crozier knows most posties are struggling financially and wants to make us struggle even more by nit picking at every little so called perk we are getting.
Another thing he fails to mention is that a lot of posties have worked for 30-40 years for RM and still get the same money as someone who has only 1 years service and fractionally more than someone who has been in the job for a week.
In most jobs if you perform well you get a pay rise and after a few years earn more than the new boy,in RM this doesn't happen.
I have worked in other jobs and find that financially and stress fully RM is not any better or worse than any other company in the long term.However I do notice that a lot of older posties look a lot worse for wear than a middle class man of the same age and the life expectancy of posties is probably less than the national average and Crozier knows all this and still he wants blood out of a stone.
