Re: moving on up...
Funnily enough I got a letter today from the Team North People Development Manager asking me if I would like to progress within Royal Mail either as an Operational Manager or in support functions.
They asked a few questions and are allegedly looking to create a "frontline talent pool".
It says they are writing to all employees and if you are interested they will let your DSM and WCM team know you are "keen to develop".
It's not for me but maybe the chance will come to you...

Ok prepare for backlash, get your hard hat on.
Personally I think its commendable that you want to improve your lot. Good on you.
You need to carefully look at where the business is heading and where the cuts are likely to occur. The delivery staff are no means safe but will be the last to go as they will always need someone to actually take out the delivery. The managers will go before the delivery front.
You may want to consider becoming a managers buddy which will teach you the in's and out's and get you on the conference calls etc but will retain your duty position within the office.

Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Re: moving on up...
It's my humble opinion (and that of the various managers I come into contact with) that the management cull will start in the next year or two, beginning with all the planning teams who did such a great job! I would take a guess that those of us who are workplace coaches are being lined up for some sort of cut-rate team leader/supervisor role in the future so that the management headcount can be drastically reduced.
Maybe it's not a great time to be looking at a future as an RM manager but I've been known to be wrong before :)

well if u want to be a manager you need to start smoking 20 fags a day and figure out how to work the coffee machine, when this has been done then get ready to screw over your colleagues.

Re: moving on up...
You can practise for the position before you apply:
1. Bring a kettle, sugar, milk and a jar of coffee in to work.
2. Stand in the cloakroom mirror and boll*ck yourself for cutting-off.
3. On a busy Wednesday tell yourself you have lapsing to do.
4. Bring a computer swivel chair to work.
5. Pressure yourself into doing docket work each day.
6. Then complain to yourself about the cost of the docket, and 'forget' to pay yourself 2 hours of it.
7. Find somebody on light duties and kick their bad knee while telling them they're 'taking the p!ss'.
8. Learn how to operate the 'play' button for RMTV for waste-time-learning' (WTL) each Tuesday.
9. Clear your excess door-2-dustbins up each Saturday and accuse yourself of not delivering them all.
10. Make yourself deliver a packet or two for the round next-door because the 'runner' on the job left at 08:15 before his mis-sorts were given him.
Have fun!

Re: moving on up...
I know one manager, Postie for less than a year and now a Manager, I know of other guys not been long as a Postie then as a Manager.
Know of other guys who were Managers now Posties.
Commendable you wish to become a Manager, but look closely at just what they do ,look at the Doms in nearby offices, you will be their whipping boy and the area Managers whipping boy, you need a crap job covering who you going to call ?
You will be working long hours throwing off walks you don't know delivering walks you don't know, briefing staff on total crap .
Good Luck

You may lose the trust off your friends.
If you feel that's a price worth paying, good luck to you.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
