Re: tie down
the content of duties vary up and down the country from office to office and some on a 24 hour contract will vary from a 24 hour contract in another office, you need to ask to see your duty 318 which will show exactly how much time has been set aside for what in your dutycuz50 wrote:Looking for some info . I start a 9.30 and have to tie down/do redirections on whatever duty im put on that day is this correct im the last out. Today never finnished till 15.15 with no break im 5h.30m per day.

Re: tie down
What is a duty 318?
My view is that you need to do the redirection and tie down at the very least: and you are lucky that is all you have to do...
The problem is that your round is either too big or you can do the job a bit quicker and/or more efficiently.
It does not look like you are a new starter so you should know by now how long the walks take and you should be able to compare yourself to the average - my guess.
My other guess is that the only reason you are last out (which does not matter, really) is that you are coming in on your time. In most offices like yours, most people will have been out even before you come in on certain days - if they come in early and/or if they are on easier rounds.
Answer is to cut off or complain to manager to be paid OT...

Re: tie down
Every duty has one, it should be in the walk log, it details exactly what the duty has been planned for, so if he has a 4hr 15 walk, this will be on there, they 30 min break as well and also what else he should be doing to make up the last 45 minutes, its not a hard fast rule but can be used if the walk isnt prepped far enough for him coming in starting. it will also contain the phrase "as directed" or words to that effect somewhere as wellchrisj wrote:What is a duty 318?
Again as i said to the OP, different offices vary from place to place, theres no minimum or maximum, in ours the 24 hour staff do no indoor work whatsoever, their whole duty is tied down and prepped for them, they only load van and go, but then they have 4hr 20 min walks, 15 min break and 13 minute indoor time to make up their day, so very little scope for any indoor work in 13 minutes, 10 of which are at end of duty for kill off etcchrisj wrote:My view is that you need to do the redirection and tie down at the very least: and you are lucky that is all you have to do...

Re: tie down
zx135. Why only 15 minutes break. Shouldn't that be 20 minutes ?

Re: tie down
Even if we agree that the work varies from office to office, i will hazard a guess that your (zx135) office is atypical. I said that from experience and from the many posts we have had here...
The poster is on 27.5 hours not 24 hours (5:30 hr a day). This is the same as we have in my office. Even if his delivery is 4.30 hrs, he still has just enough time to do redirections and tie down.
Offices are different, yes; but they are also different to your office - one that appears to be one of those strong unionised ones where things are done properly and the local rep is super effective and powerful...

Re: tie down
If you look more close at the hours then, 4h30 delivery leaves 1h indoor, broken down 30 minutes is break, 10 minutes for kill offs at end of duty, that leaves you 20 minutes, 6 minutes are allocated daily for van checks, time to load van, collect keys, collect specials sign onto PDA, all in remaining 14 minutes, so how much time does it take to do redirections and tie down? That's not even in including if he has had his weekly wtll time as well, some offices have a daily huddle as wellchrisj wrote:

Again you can't say he has enough time to do things as you don't know the duty content or the way his office is set up, regardless of whether it unionised or not
Every single duty that has went through the revision has had a new 318 prepared ask to see it and you will find out exactly how much indoor time has been allocated to what

Re: tie down
We are all making guesses based on experience but like I said this person hours is closely related to that in my office... I did say he barely has time for redirection and bag up but I assumed he has a 4.30hrs delivery - he might well has less and it will be less on certain days even if he said he gets 5.30 hours every day. He also has 20 minutes break not 30 minutes.
The 27.5 hrs in my office often do last dregs of flats (could be small or lots), missorts, kill offs, redirections and bagging up and load up. Some even drive; all will drive at some stage. Clearly they are being exploited because there is just not enough time but hey ho, most of the office come in early...
___________________________________________________________________
If only that 318 is available and so generous as you have put it... 10 minutes for kill off??? Also van checks - 6 minutes? That is if this person is in a pair and if he is driving... I very much doubt posties can categorically find out that they have 6 mins for van checks
It sounds like you work in a very good office where there is , duty 318, resource meetings and so on... But from past posts there are many offices that do no have 318 or seen on for many many years... Yes, some do have them but you appear to be the main person to refer to 318 the most... Really!
Not to worry! All offices are different but some appear more different than others...

Re: tie down
its impossible to say, theres no such things as an average duty, time to tie down a rural 180 call duty will be completely different to a 750 call town duty, chrisj wrote:Ok.

Redirection:
Bagging up:
fully tieing down, sorting packets and bagging up a full large duty is going to take you at least 15 minutes where as a rural might be 10 or less, redirections anywhere between 3 or 4 min up to about 10 depending on how many you have, how much mail they get, how many local ones you need to pass round, how close the redirection frame is etc,
Theres lots of variables, its impossible to tell, thats why i said you cant really advise the op what his duty should or should not contain, you dont know his ofice, how its set up, how the duty 318s have been planned, a 5hr30 duty in your office will be completely different to a 5hr30 duty in another office, for a start your guys seem to be getting the incorrect amount of break time, that extra 10 minutes break could mean an end to the sorting they are having to do

Re: tie down
the tie down time for each duty can be found within the IWT prep page example below.
Tie Down Workload Only
Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Week
0.42 0.41 0.50 0.49 0.50 0.45 4.39
0.31 0.30 0.39 0.38 0.38 0.34 3.32
0.27 0.26 0.36 0.34 0.35 0.30 3.10
0.36 0.32 0.45 0.43 0.44 0.39 4.02
The main driver for these tie down times is driven by the number of wings each duty is allocated. For example I have seen a frame with 6DP (bulk firms) and a total prep time of 32mins,which 31mins is for tie down due to the frame having 4 wings.
So you could ask to see a printout of this page to see what the tie down times are for your duty.

Re: tie down
On the breaks, I just got slightly confused just like you. We used to have 24 hours posties but that was all changed to 27.5 hours.
The break time is 30 minutes as you say. I started as a 30 hours and that went to 32 hours... Moreover, we do not scheduled breaks so the amount of breaks taking is a moot point; and given that we have FT/PT combos and the FT staff have 40 minutes break...
Anyways, we can agreed that things vary but it does not mean we cannot try and given some advice based on the info from the poster... The poster can always come with more info but some people just ask and disappear.
If we just refer to duty 318, then very few will get advice here because a lot do not have them. You cannot demand (OP) or advice based on something that does not exist - some people here even think it is a thing of the 90s.
Even if you have duty 318s, they have to be updated very frequently because things do change. If new blocks of flats were built or whatever...
BTW, redirections can take me from 2 minutes to 15+ minutes, and that is just tough luck in my office: someone with a full box of redirections will just have to get on with compared to someone with about 9/10 mostly inactive ones. For rounds that I know well with a handful of active redirections, I can do them as I go along...
Thanks for the reply. So what about the rates of pay for delivery Overtime?
