not getting bank holidays back.

i work on a the rest week system of 1 week off in every 6. luckily (or so i thought) my week fell on christmas week. the staff who work on a 5-day week and their day off fell on either christmas day or boxing day will get their day off given back to them in their annual leave. this has always been the office policy, an extra days holiday if your day off falls on a bank holiday. however, because i'm on the rest week system i've been told this doesn't apply and that you have to 'take the rough with the smooth' (direct quote). surely the same principles should apply? over any 6 week period i'm working the exact same amount of hours and days as someone on a 5-day week. i transferred from another office last year and i'm sure we were given our bank holidays back in the annual leave allowance even if it fell on a rest week. just wondering what the policy was in other offices?

Rest week system? I like the sound of that; is it a common scheme or does it require special circumstances?

it's quite common. you work 6 days a week for 5 straight weeks and then have an entire week off. by the end of the 6 weeks you have still had a mon, tue, wed, thurs, fri, sat off, just in one block instead of rotating them week to week. so the same hours are worked and the same days off are had as someone on a 5 day week. i worked in bristol for 2 years and this was the norm, around 75% of the office were on this system. i transferred to wolverhampton and it was not in place so had to change to a 5-day week. after much persuasion the rest week system was implemented with new methods for around 13 people in the office.

you are due back the bank holidays, get your rep to help you put in a grievance about it,

The bank holiday was simply on your day off so you are simply entitled to it back, the fact your on this type of attendance pattern does not matter

Its not an individual option -its an office one usually introduced in a revision after a vote. You have to have more than just yourself doing it for it to work.

If there are ANY banks holidays in your rota week off, or annual leave or even rest-days if you are on the one-day-a-week-off system, you should get them credited back as leave on the system - it's automatic, and once the DOM enters it the computer will do it anyway. By law you are entitled to 28-days paid leave, or pro-rata if part-time. This may or may not include Bank Holidays dependant on which industry you are in. It does include them at RM.

I thought that would be the case, but haven't heard about it in my 2 months, so am assuming that we dont do it at our office.

In the job. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy it more than most work i've done.
