My contract ran out on 31/12/2013 (I started working for RM about 13 months ago) and today I received my new contract, which is a fixed term from 01/01/2014 to 27/01/2014. I'm hoping that is a typo! 2 weeks left on my new contract?! WTF! I know for a fact we are short staffed in our office so I'm a little puzzled at this decision. Guess I'll just have to grill the dom on Monday. RM

That is so typical of how this company operates. I was on a rolling 20 hour contract up until April last year - I then got a permanent 20 hour contract. The thing is I've regularly been doing 40 hours + since September 2012 and despite our office being understaffed I've still not been offered a full time contract. They would be completely stuffed if I just stuck to my contracted hours - the only reason I can see for them doing this is to save money - I only get paid 20 hours when I'm on leave.

RM will continue shy away from larger contracts even with a new deal because they know full well there are a hell of a lot -39 posties, why give us longer hours contracts to pay more holiday/sick pay

I've just had my 3rd 3 month contract come through the post. It riles me the way they word it.... "The reason for your contract being for a fixed term is that it is anticipated the requirement for your employment is likely to cease on or about the expiry date because of business reorganisation". Im on a 24 hour contract but I can't remember the last time I worked less than 40 hours. The business reorganisation has increased the amount of posties needed as walks have been made smaller to accomodate the use of trolleys. I think they seriously need to re-word the contract. They know they can't afford to lose me as they are under staffed as it is. For instance, 2 days ago, 14 walks needed covering. The staffing manager came upto me with his puppy eyes and begged me to do 3/4 walk on O/T, not to mention lapsing aswell. I reluctantly said yes as im a sucker for punishment! Unfortunately they've got us part timers by the short and curleys as they know most of us are crying out for O/T just to make hour wages upto full time.... Rant over!

Leave payments should be calculated on the average hours worked over the previous twelve weeks.

Should do at all royal mail. My claim for such was based on a case of a postman on a one hour contract.

The Christmas Bonus doesn,t get upgraded for worked hours in deliveries so fat chance holiday or sickness pay will.

I was just hoping for a permanent contract (I'm on 32 hours a week) . I can live off 32 hours, as with most part-timers we usually get OT, this week I've done 41.5hrs. It just surprised me that I didn't even get 3 months, not even 1?

And why would royal mail give you a 39 hour contract when your doing ot. it saves them on holidays, sick, pension etc. If you wanna get a chance at having 39 hours then all the part timers in your office need to work their contract hours. RM will then send down the useless managers to give you a pep talk most likely and threaten you and scare you into thinking your not doing your job good enough.but if you stick to your guns you will bring the office to its knees then they might think 's**t'. sorry to be blunt but from a business point of view no company is gonna give someone full time contract when they know they will always do overtime.

The reasons why there is not a decent overtime rate are (a) because we will (nearly) all work overtime at just a few pence an hour above the basic rate and (b) because the CWU believes we shouldn't work overtime which undermines the case for getting a living wage from working just 39 hours.

I also got a new contract yesterday, not for 3 or 6 months but this time for 5 months.
