Depending on your age IMO its a good thing I took buy down 8 years ago to 25 hours and am thinking of dropping another day down to 20 hours - I am over 65 that's the down side

DVb is there still buy downs? I've had enough of a lot of things in r m now ,so instead of leaving mayb it's the best thing to do.

In my old DO,we had three guys who did this,two were over 60 and one was in his forties (he did it to look after his poorly mum),all three of them said it is great,they work Thursday,Friday and Saturday one week and Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday the following week so they get a week off every two weeks.

I don't know tbh, I haven't heard of any for a long time, nobody at mine has had one since they had the initial take up. I think it was the beginning of the scheme by RM for more PT and fewer FT. It suited me at that time and I believe it has extended my working life. I am considering retiring this year but I'll see how the four day weeks go before making the final decision.

Cutting hours can be great, try and work fewer days and not fewer hours per day. Its harder to make you come in on your days off and easier for them to make you work extra hours on a part time duty. Yes they can not force you to do extra work but many mind games can be used, better to be one step ahead of them.

How? that's like 0.1 percent tax

No he is paying the same tax rate as everyone else.

But because he is on 20 hours he is a lot closer to the Personal Tax allowance of £9,440. All earnings after that are taxed at 20%

Yep what True blue sounds right, (I think!)

As already mentioned cutting days rather than hours is the best way, I'm doing jobshare week on, week off... so I'm actually fulltime on my week in. Always plenty of overtime available on my week off if I want it.

Yes but you pay tax across the year not separately on each pay packet. Check you pay packet today the tax paid figure for the week will be less than (or around) 10%, not the basic rate of 20%.
