waiting for partners

Is there a rule about waiting for your partner after you have finished your loop? Are we allowed to wait at the van or do we have to go and help them out? Both using trollies but partner taking about 5min longer per loop. Anticipating managers to be out so want to see what the rules are. Thanks in advance.

Is this a serious question. Not sure if you are taking the mickey on wanting rules for every possible action and occurrence while you are on deliveries. Or do you want rules for how much help you give to each other.

May I sincerely and with all due regard advise that an application of common sense would be better option, rather than reaching for the rule book. Help him out and yourself by either helping deliver the loops, by getting the next loop ready, by popping off and delivering a large item (or tracked special etc), by endorsing any form lefts that need doing, even by cleaning out the van a little.

Rules of Park&Loop Fight Club.

1st RULE: You do not talk about wives/husbands.

2nd RULE: You DO NOT talk about children.

3rd RULE: If someone says "stop" or goes limp leave them at the side of the road.

4th RULE: Only two guys to a van.

5th RULE: Two loops at a time.

6th RULE: No phone calls, no Facebooking.

7th RULE: Deliveries will go on as long as they have to.

8th RULE: If this is your first time at park&loop, you HAVE to complete.

9th RULE: If you finish the loop first have a smoke or a Mars Bar,It's only 5 minutes and constantly going back to help someone will either make them feel bad or encourage them to take the piss, As long as the loops are planned properly it'll work itself out on a swings and roundabouts basis.

I am currently looking out of my window at the slowest postman ever. This guy will set his partner back by at least 20 minutes per loop the way he is going around terraced properties in a low letter volume council areas. I can still the the same postman 10 minutes within a small area of view from my window. Shocking!

All I can say is that he looks new, no uniform, on a LWT (pushing instead of pulling), much much older gent with a limp. So you are lucky.

I tend to try and help out so that we can get on. But you cannot always help - it depends on where he is and how much the assistance will achieve. Sometimes, best to stay put, have a break, snack or drink, organise the bags, tidy up and get ready so that you can be gone as soon as he arrives.

Having said the above, I have know managers put a junior part-timer under serious pressure due to paired with a slower senior full time staff. The manager will just not have him trying to claim OT and the fact that they were going over... It was common knowledge that the senior man is slow and he had previously been on the same easy round for about 10 years and he actually lives on the said round and does not drive... Furthermore, he tends to work with people that come in very early and dash around.

So I can sympathise if someone is 30 minutes slower every day.

I have no issues helping out to get round quicker. Its more if you have cut/left mail behind as you don't have time
By helping out a partner you will be getting done quicker/early when you have left mail behind. That opens you up for managers getting on your case. Also, the slower person may be insisting that you don't help.

You are now much clearer. And it goes to show that people should try and read between the lines not too judgemental.

Actually, there is poster here who said that he will refuse help from a partner... And if your partner is not slow but steady and will like to make a point; helping him to finish earlier will not be appreciated and it also defeats his point of proving that your round is perhaps too big or that you do not have time to do lapsing.

As we can see, Lapsing is one of the biggest issues in DO and one that can cause the most consternation and harassment from managers.

but he is old school and believes we still offer a service ,time to talk to customers deliver to a neighbour, etc ,he once took over 20 minutes to deliver a parcel walking back wards and forwards up and down the road, while i did his loop and he could not see anything wrong when i pointed out that i had just done his loop,

This point actually resonates... very few people are actually that slow at walking (more like some are very fast at walking than others). But someone knocking on 8 to 10 doors to deliver a parcel takes the biscuit in a park and loop and that during Xmas is just maddening. At the end, this partner could not deliver the said parcel and he had to card it. I had left the van did about 2 packets in a Close and double back with the van to see what was going on - I thought he had had an misshap.

What I did in the end was try to do all the packets if I could instead of trying to do it together at the end. This person in question is so slow that we abandoned park and loop and working as a pair from the van. He went old school but with a trolley instead of a bike and I had to do bag drops (well of my start) and virtually all the packets...

The reason why I have lasted so long in this job is the ability to work on my own when out but that luxury has been well and truly shattered.

Some posties do the talking and going the extra miles for tips and some just do but either way, the new way of working and consideration for one's partner should stop this practice.

What's wrong with pushing your LWT? I push mine and find it far better and safer than pulling. You also have more control over it while pushing

I think it is a simple law of physics - pulling is easier than pushing; especially if when they LWT is at its heaviest.

You push away and pull along... Next time, you see a paper boy and girl - observe!

Also we have covered the issues of coming to an abrupt stop when you are pushing. I am sorry , you have less control when you are pushing something away from you - it hits a stone or into a crack or hole and you will feel the strain on your wrist...

How about going up a kerb? Moreover, you are covering about 1/3 of your immediate view of the ground by the LWT/Bags...
