Saturday Contract - Over time.

Hello all just a quick question.

I've been a Saturday for over a year now and am currently doing all my overtime in a mail centre but my Saturday contract is for deliveries.

Am I entitled to do my overtime where I choose in the week and can my delivery office pull me out if they are short staffed in the week.

What you do outside your contracted hours and where you do your overtime is your business.

Well that's what I thought.
But I've been in the situation where I have been working in the Mail center in the week and the delivery office where I'm contracted to has called and said I have to either go to delivery's or I have to go home.

I will urge that you try and keep the Mail Centre and your delivery office sweet. You should avoid trying to put the MC in a position where they are at loggerheads with your delivery office - they will just side with your delivery office anyway.

Just accept that you will have to do some OT at your delivery office from time to time. I think diplomacy is the key.

If for arguments sake he had another job outside of Royal Mail the delivery office would have no say in whether he did overtime or not. The delivery office has no call on where he decides to work in his own time, as Fish has already said. Just tell the DOM to do one. I know the backlash will be that he wont be offered overtime in the DO, but that decision is for him to take and not under pressure from a DOM.

All I am saying is that since they know where he does his OT and it is for the same company then the Mail Centre management will most likely side with his Delivery Office manager.

I can just see the 2 managers having a word and bang goes his opportunity to do OT in the Mail Centre. At the end of the day, it is not like working for 2 different companies, the MC manager does not have to offer him OT - simple!

It is my advice but then it is up to him. Just think about it for a while...

The point is that the DOM and the Mailcentre Manager should not be discussing this at all. If there is work at a mail centre and he wishes to do it during his non contracted time (ie in his own time), that is his business and not up for discussion between these two managers.

Since they have already been discussing the point and they have threatened to send him home from the Mail Centre, the issue is beyond what you are advocating.

It is up to the Mail Centre manager to decide the people outside his office that he allocates OT to. Do you not accept that?

In the past, I have tried to do OT at a MC and I ring up and they say Yes or No. Because I do not work there; I am not privy as to why they have said No. And I cannot go and start a query because I am not even one of their worker... In the end, I gave up trying.

I suppose the Union organises OT in some offices but I doubt in this case an outside worker can take issues with being refused OT - even if overtime is available.

Of course a mail centre manager can employ who he wants. The point is he is trying to offload this guy who presumably has worked efficiently at the mail centre, because some DOM elsewhere requires the guys services, but is not willing to give him extra contracted hours. If you cannot see that this stinks then I rest my case.

The other point Chris is that the DOM is saying that the guy either does overtime in the DO or he goes home. That is restriction of trade and I would have thought unlawful if the Mail centre manager has work available.
