Hi, I, ve recently got a new P & L partner and he, s a bit of a runner. I, ve no real problem with that but I, ve noticed he leaves his pouch on the floor at the start of cul-de-sacs, dead end streets etc, runs round with a bundle and then picks his pouch back up.
What are the security implications here? Our gaffer regularly patrols, indeed he, s approached me twice in the last year while I was delivering. On a personal note could this cause any problems for me or would everything be on his shoulders?

if he gets seen and caught doing that I imagine that he will face the sack.

He is committing a dismissal offence.

You can either report him (you won't be popular), or leave him to it.
But, if he is caught and you haven't reported the issue, don't admit you knew, or else you may find yourself in it too.

You could also speak to him about it, but it is likely that won't end well either.

Thanks for the quick replies. I did consider telling him to knock it on the head, but he, s neither friendly nor approachable. I, ll just have to plead ignorance if he, s unlucky enough to be caught but hopefully it wont come to that.

The bizarre thing is if he was using a trolley as long as it was in sight at all times and he wasn't ridiculously far away from it he would probably be ok.

You could always have a word with the workplace coach who could do an anonymous group mail integrity briefing.
He might not change his ways but at least you tried.

I regularly drive though a village done by one of our SPDO's it's like a family day outing on their deliveries on a Saturday partners and kids pushing the HCT's and delivering the mail Always thought the IB or SPDO DIM would have a field day with dismissals but I'm guessing they don't like working Saturdays either.

I usually lock up my hct to a lamp post and walk round, only takes a few seconds. Theres normally a sticker under the lid which tells you what you should do but i cant remember exactly what the rules are.

The trolley should only be left unattended in places where a trolley can't go - (flats/steep hills) and those areas should be subject to a risk assessment to determine how long it can be left for.
If there is no risk assessment the trolley should be not be left unattended.

The new RM Delivery Equipment Security Procedure is far more lax than it ever was.

You can leave an HCT unattended in any risk level area now for 10 minutes so the risk assessment is a bit of a farce.
You shouldn't leave an LWT for more than 1 minute but it does offer the get out clause that if it takes longer to obtain a signature so be it and the usual whenever left unattended there is a significant deterrent to criminal activity if the delivery officer is in line of sight.
You can even leave mail in the front of a van now for 10 minutes which was a hanging offence in years gone by.

The whole thing is also undermined even more at the start by the statement... It should be borne in mind that these specifications are intended for use in an operational environment. As such there will undoubtedly be exceptional occasions when a degree of flex will be needed and a common sense approach called for.

It does however state clearly DON’T•Ever leave your delivery pouch unattended.

How does that square with removing weight from the shoulder?
Isn't our H&S still the number one priority?

As far as I am aware, any misdemeanours are a joint responsibility. One of out drivers, on shared delivery, forgot he put a special under the seat, they were both suspended.

There should be no pouches anyway. Small bags can be used, but only after a H&S risk assesment.

One other thing to mention, his pouches contain the specials for whichever of his loops he, s doing so that makes things even worse if he, s caught.
