Post by hans solo »

when did the term being patrolled change into delivery safety report :left: :left: :left: :left:
cut off tue due to d2d and excess mail from previous day
on p&l with partner genuinely working to time
2 managers out in own not rm vehicle observed myself for few minutes before approaching me with their safety report
ie shoes ok , do you have dog peg
asked how many other people have they checked , 1 apparently will check tomorrow as they named them :left:
should they not have presented themselves straight away or were they actually spying on us :nervous

The SMATs or what were previously Outdoor Observations are to ensure that you are working safely. They are not new, they have been around for a couple of years, and each of your Managers have a minimum weekly quota to report on.

Your Manager(s) should have told you what you were doing correctly as well as providing advice/training on any shortcomings.

Had exactly the same happen to partner and myself.
Funnily enough it was at the end of our last loop and we had cut off that day.
Asked around the office. No one else had been approached.
Bag checks are the current favourite :arrrghhh

Hans, did they asked you to sign the observation that they were completing and did they advise you that you are entitled to receive a copy of it?
They were intimidating you but if you raise a grievance they will state that they were adhering to the guidelines and looking to see whether you were carrying out your duty to the walk specifications and in order to do this they review from a distance and back each other up.
As someone has previously said, they only carry out these observations on those who are cutting off. This is intimidation and treating people differently to others. The only problem is it is difficult to prove and they know it.

Judging by your post it does seems less difficult to prove than first thought.
If we are asked to sign, and are entitled to a copy of these observations it does not seem beyond our reach to see if anyone else has been observed.
Ask around the office, ask everyone. Leave it a week or two and ask again, the likelihood that no one else may have experienced this will or should determine your next course of action. If you choose a grievance and they quote guidelines ask for a copy of the policy or better still phone HR and ask them to send you a copy.
To quote dingo in a roundabout way we must put this stuff down in black and white, create a paper trail. If we don't do this the business denies that anything untoward is ever happening. They will stick to the book to get shot of you and encourage you to resolve it informally, don't, pursue it, get your rep on board (if you're a member, if not still use the procedure).

Perhaps we could set up a national data on this forum of all those who have experienced this phenomenon over the next 6 months and present it to the CWU.
