missing special

looking for a bit of advice/guidance/reassurance here really.

xmas eve I had a special, they were in so 739 was left, as at the time i had no where else to leave it i put it in the pocket in the side door (yes i know what a horrendous decision)

a couple of hours into my walk I noticed it wasn't where I left it, it had gone awol - I can only assume it got blown out somewhere along the line.

being honest i phoned up the manager on duty at the time to report it - obviously looked all over the van for it and re traced my steps.

my question is what should i do now?
we are waiting to see if it comes back into circulation as it may have been found and popped back into the post over the xmas break.
the customer came into collect the item today but didnt know what it was they werent expecting anything (was a letter)

I would suggest that because the RM Delivery Equipment Security Procedure states:

DO

• Carry ALL Special Delivery items in the cargo area of the van only (No exceptions)

DON'T

• Ever carry or retain Special Delivery items in the cab area

You are likely to be facing conduct, regardless of any future return of the lost item of mail.

its a genuine mistake. 1st offence , written warning if that. who has not lost mail? our office dom's pet lost an sd which was found in the street the next day and handed to me. A week later I mislaid a parcel (not sd) which was recovered. The dom who I do not get on with was going to make a big issue of it until I reminded him of his pet's mistake. result no action. it was my get out of jail card.

its a genuine mistake.

Absolute rubbish, whilst nobody is suggesting that there was intent to lose the item the loss was an unfortunate result of a disregard for the rules.

The security rules were introduced in order to ensure that items would not be lost or stolen, they were ignored and an item has become lost.
